Assam's transport corridors are reshaping how people, industries and heritage destinations connect across the state. Highways, bridges, rail links and inland waterways are improving regional mobility while supporting industrial growth, tourism and urban expansion. During FY2025-26, projects under Bharatmala, bridge construction across the Brahmaputra, logistics infrastructure and multimodal transport initiatives continued to strengthen connectivity. Together, these corridors are reinforcing Assam's position as the gateway to Northeast India while linking economic centres with cultural and natural landmarks.
Infrastructure has become a defining force in Assam's development, connecting industrial centres, heritage towns and tourism destinations through an expanding network of roads, bridges, waterways and railways. These corridors are improving accessibility across the Brahmaputra Valley while supporting logistics, commerce, public infrastructure and regional economic activity throughout the state.
Jogighopa: Emerging as Assam's Logistics Hub
Jogighopa is developing into one of Northeast India's most significant logistics centres. The Inland Waterways Authority of India is advancing the Jogighopa Multimodal Logistics Park and Inland Water Terminal, integrating road, rail and river transport. Located on National Waterway-2, the project strengthens freight movement across the Brahmaputra while improving connectivity to neighbouring states and Bangladesh.
Bogibeel Bridge Corridor: Connecting Upper Assam
The Bogibeel Bridge has transformed connectivity between Dibrugarh and Dhemaji by linking the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra through road and railway networks. Improved access has strengthened movement between Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh while supporting trade, education, healthcare and tourism across the region. Supporting road infrastructure continued to receive attention during FY2025-26.
Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge: Strengthening Western Assam
Construction of the Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge continues to progress as one of India's longest river bridge projects. Once operational, it will significantly reduce travel time between Assam and Meghalaya while strengthening freight movement and regional connectivity. The project forms an important component of the Bharatmala Pariyojana and supports broader economic integration across Northeast India.
Silchar: Gateway to Southern Assam
Silchar continues to benefit from national highway upgrades, railway modernisation and airport improvements that are strengthening connectivity across the Barak Valley. Better transport infrastructure supports trade with neighbouring states while improving access to heritage destinations and tourism circuits in southern Assam.
Guwahati: Assam's Multimodal Gateway
Guwahati remains the state's principal transport and commercial hub, where highways, railways, inland waterways and air connectivity converge. During FY2025-26, Smart City projects, riverfront improvements, road widening, flyovers and multimodal transport initiatives continued alongside upgrades to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. These projects complement Guwahati's role as the gateway to Kamakhya Temple, Umananda Island and the wider Northeast.
Dibrugarh: River, Rail and Aviation Connectivity
Dibrugarh has strengthened its position as an important transport hub through improvements in airport infrastructure, inland water transport and highway connectivity. Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra, the city also serves as a commercial centre for Assam's tea industry, while enhanced transport networks are supporting tourism and business activity across Upper Assam.
Sivasagar: Linking Heritage Through Better Connectivity
Home to the monuments of the Ahom dynasty, Sivasagar continues to benefit from improved road infrastructure connecting it with Jorhat, Dibrugarh and neighbouring districts. Highway upgrades and tourism infrastructure undertaken during FY2025-26 have enhanced access to Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar and other heritage landmarks, strengthening the city's position on Assam's cultural tourism circuit.
Assam's transport corridors are extending beyond connectivity to support industrial development, tourism and regional integration. From multimodal logistics hubs and major river bridges to upgraded highways and heritage-linked road networks, these projects are strengthening the state's infrastructure while improving access to the places that define Assam's economy, culture and natural landscape.
