Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay reviewed the progress of Chennai Metro Rail's Phase I and Phase II projects, inspecting key construction sites, operational facilities and the city's upcoming driverless metro corridor. During the visit, he travelled on the operational metro network, reviewed work on major infrastructure projects and assessed preparedness for future services. The inspection also covered last-mile connectivity, feeder transport and passenger facilities. The review comes as Chennai Metro continues work on its 118.9-km Phase II expansion, one of the country's largest urban transport infrastructure projects.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay reviewed the progress of Chennai Metro Rail's ongoing expansion projects and operational preparedness during an inspection of the city's metro network. The visit covered both the operational Phase I network and the under-construction Phase II project, with a focus on accelerating work, improving commuter facilities and ensuring timely completion of upcoming corridors.
The Chief Minister began his visit by travelling on the operational metro network after purchasing a paper ticket at the Government Estate Metro station. He travelled to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) headquarters at Nandanam, where officials briefed him on train operations, passenger services and the progress of ongoing infrastructure works.
At the Operations Control Centre, Vijay reviewed the systems that monitor train movements, safety protocols and operational readiness for the expanding metro network. He also assessed preparations for new corridors that are expected to become operational in phases over the coming months and years.
As part of the inspection, the Chief Minister visited major construction sites under Chennai Metro Phase II, including the Kathipara multi-level flyover section and other key project locations. Officials updated him on civil works, station construction and project timelines, while he directed them to maintain construction quality and ensure that work progresses as scheduled.
A key highlight of the visit was the inspection of the city's upcoming driverless metro corridor. Vijay took a trial ride on an Unattended Train Operation (UTO) driverless metro train on the Poonamallee Bypass–Vadapalani section, where testing and operational preparations are underway before the corridor is opened to passengers. The review included an assessment of safety systems, signalling infrastructure and the readiness of automated train operations.
The Chief Minister also reviewed passenger amenities, last-mile connectivity and feeder transport services, emphasising the need to provide seamless connectivity between metro stations and surrounding residential and commercial areas. Officials discussed measures to improve commuter convenience and strengthen integration with other public transport systems.
Chennai Metro Phase II is one of India's largest metro expansion projects, covering about 118.9 kilometres with three new corridors connecting several residential, commercial and industrial areas across the city. The project is expected to significantly improve urban mobility, reduce travel time and enhance public transport connectivity once completed in phases.
The Chennai Metro network currently operates two corridors, while Phase II will add three more lines and substantially expand the city's rapid transit system. The project is also introducing advanced signalling systems and driverless train technology, making Chennai one of the few Indian cities to adopt automated metro operations on new corridors.
