Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed authorities to adopt an integrated and future-ready approach for the development of Aerocity, highlighting its strategic link with Dwarka, one of the capital's emerging investment hubs. During a recent review, he stressed better coordination between the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and GMR, along with a focus on sustainable infrastructure, water conservation, flood management, traffic planning and seamless last-mile Metro connectivity. The initiative aims to support Aerocity's growth as a major commercial, hospitality and transit hub while ensuring long-term urban resilience.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed authorities to ensure integrated and future-ready development of the Aerocity area near Indira Gandhi International Airport, citing its strategic proximity to Dwarka, which is emerging as one of the capital's key investment and commercial corridors. The directions were issued during his recent visit to Aerocity, where ongoing infrastructure projects were reviewed.
During the visit, GMR, the operator of Indira Gandhi International Airport, made a detailed presentation on the infrastructure works currently underway in Aerocity. Sandhu emphasised that close coordination between the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and GMR would be essential to ensure that the development of Aerocity and Dwarka progresses in a planned and complementary manner.
He noted that as Dwarka continues to attract investments and commercial development, integrating Aerocity with the larger sub-city will strengthen connectivity and improve the overall urban ecosystem. The Lieutenant Governor also directed that green infrastructure and sustainability should remain central to all future planning instead of being treated as secondary considerations after infrastructure is built.
The review also covered water conservation measures and flood management systems being implemented in the area to minimise the risk of waterlogging during the monsoon. Officials discussed the importance of building resilient infrastructure capable of addressing climate-related challenges while supporting the area's long-term growth.
Traffic management in and around Aerocity was another key focus of the meeting, considering the heavy movement of vehicles due to the airport and the area's growing commercial and hospitality presence. Sandhu reviewed plans aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion as visitor numbers continue to increase.
The Lieutenant Governor also stressed the need for seamless last-mile Metro connectivity to improve accessibility for commuters, business travellers and tourists. He said efficient public transport integration would be critical as Aerocity continues to expand into an important commercial and transit destination.
According to officials, Sandhu said sustainability, water security and efficient mobility should form the foundation of Aerocity's development strategy. He indicated that these aspects must be incorporated into the planning process from the outset to create infrastructure that remains efficient and resilient over the long term.
Aerocity has emerged as one of Delhi's fastest-growing business and hospitality districts, with premium hotels, office developments, retail spaces and commercial projects benefiting from its proximity to the airport. The area is also expected to gain from the ongoing expansion of Dwarka and improvements in transport infrastructure, making integrated planning increasingly important for supporting future economic activity.
