The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) carried out demolition action against six unauthorised constructions in the Airoli ward earlier this week, continuing its enforcement drive following the removal of 13 illegal structures a day earlier. The action was undertaken under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966, after notices were issued to property owners for unauthorised construction. The demolition drive forms part of the civic body's compliance with directions linked to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and an appeal issued by the Municipal Commissioner. The operation was carried out with demolition equipment, municipal staff, labourers and police protection.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) demolished six unauthorised constructions in the Airoli ward earlier this week as part of its ongoing enforcement campaign against illegal buildings in the city. The action followed the demolition of 13 unauthorised structures carried out in the same ward a day earlier.
According to the civic body, the latest demolition covered properties belonging to Deepak Avhad at E-374, Sector 2, Airoli; Devchand Madhvi at House No. 300, Sector 9, Diva Gaon; Santosh Sukhdev Prasad at House Nos. 95/97, Lane No. 5, Shiv Colony, Sector 1, Airoli; Shubham Pandagle at House Nos. 268, 269 and 270, Sector 2C, Airoli; Rajesh Patil at House Nos. 112 and 113, Diva Gaon, Airoli; and Jitendra Naik at House No. 239, Sector 9, Diva Gaon, Airoli.
The corporation stated that photographs of unauthorised buildings had been submitted before the court in connection with Contempt Petition CP/685/2025 arising from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Kishore Shetty. Based on the structures identified in the photographs, as well as other buildings where unauthorised construction was found to be underway, the G Ward office issued notices under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966.
The notices directed the respective property owners to remove the unauthorised portions of the constructions voluntarily. However, as the unauthorised works continued despite the notices, the municipal corporation proceeded with demolition action.
The demolition drive was conducted in accordance with directions issued by the Municipal Commissioner through a public appeal released on 27 July 2026. The operation was carried out under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Sanjay Shinde, with supervision from the Assistant Commissioners and Ward Officers of all eight municipal divisions. The corporation stated that the identified unauthorised structures were partially demolished during the operation.
For the enforcement exercise, the G Ward encroachment department deployed officers and staff along with 25 labourers. The demolition team used seven concrete breakers, five sledgehammers, two gas cutters and five generators during the operation. Personnel from the NMMC encroachment department and the local police were deployed in large numbers to maintain law and order throughout the drive.
The civic body stated that similar demolition action will continue against unauthorised constructions across other parts of Navi Mumbai in accordance with court directions.
