Authorities in Maharashtra's Palghar district have imposed prohibitory orders near the Vadhavan deep sea port project site to prevent unlawful gatherings amid opposition from a section of local residents. The restrictions cover a 500-metre radius around the acquired land and access road construction areas in six villages and will remain in force until September 25. The administration said the move was taken to avoid disruptions to ongoing reclamation and road construction work, while ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order during the execution of the country's largest proposed deep sea port project.
Authorities in Maharashtra's Palghar district have imposed prohibitory orders banning unlawful gatherings near the Vadhavan deep sea port project site following opposition from a section of local residents. The project site is located around 55 kilometres north of Mumbai.
The order was issued by Assistant District Collector Vishal Khatri under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) after the Vangaon Police requested preventive measures to maintain law and order.
Work on the Vadhavan port project is currently progressing, with land reclamation activities underway. As part of the project's supporting infrastructure, a two-kilometre access road is being built from Varor-Chinchani to the coastline to facilitate the transportation of construction material.
The district administration stated that the restrictions were imposed after assessing the possibility of law and order issues during the ongoing construction work. It noted that unlawful gatherings could disrupt project activities, damage public property and pose risks to public safety and human life.
Under the order, the entry of unauthorised persons and all unlawful assemblies have been prohibited within a 500-metre radius of the acquired land and access road construction areas. The restrictions apply to project zones across Kolvali, Vangaon, Bavda, Tanashi, Chinchani and Varor villages.
The prohibitory orders will remain in force until September 25.
The Vadhavan Port project, being developed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), is one of India's largest planned deep sea ports. The project has witnessed protests from sections of local fishing communities and residents over concerns related to land acquisition, livelihoods and environmental impact, while the government has maintained that the project is expected to strengthen India's maritime infrastructure and cargo handling capacity.
