The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved the removal of 126 trees for a slum rehabilitation project in Powai, enabling the construction of more than 4,000 rehabilitation homes for project-affected families. The clearance forms part of a larger set of approvals granted for infrastructure and redevelopment projects across Mumbai. Civic authorities have said the project will follow environmental safeguards, including compensatory plantation and tree transplantation wherever feasible.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has granted permission for the removal of 126 trees to facilitate a major slum rehabilitation project in Powai, allowing work to proceed on housing that will accommodate more than 4,000 project-affected families.
The approval was issued by the BMC's Tree Authority after examining the proposal submitted as part of the redevelopment scheme. The project is aimed at creating rehabilitation housing for families displaced by infrastructure and public development projects undertaken in Mumbai, helping free up land required for future urban infrastructure.
Officials stated that the tree removal is limited to the area required for construction and has been approved in accordance with the provisions of the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act. As part of the approval, the project developer will be required to undertake compensatory plantation and transplant trees wherever technically feasible to minimise the environmental impact.
The Powai redevelopment proposal is one of several infrastructure and housing projects recently reviewed by the Tree Authority. In its latest meetings, the civic body considered proposals involving tree removal or transplantation for transport corridors, redevelopment schemes and public infrastructure works across the city.
The rehabilitation project is expected to play an important role in Mumbai's housing programme by providing permanent accommodation for project-affected persons (PAPs). Dedicated rehabilitation housing is considered essential for the timely execution of infrastructure projects, as it enables authorities to relocate eligible families before construction begins on roads, metro corridors and other public works.
However, approvals involving tree removal continue to attract attention from environmental groups, which have called for strict monitoring of compensatory plantations and higher survival rates for transplanted trees. Urban planners have also emphasised the importance of integrating green spaces and sustainable landscaping into redevelopment projects to offset the loss of existing vegetation.
As Mumbai continues to undertake large-scale redevelopment and infrastructure expansion, civic authorities are increasingly tasked with balancing environmental conservation with the city's growing demand for housing and public infrastructure. The Powai project reflects this ongoing challenge, where urban development is being pursued alongside measures intended to preserve and restore the city's green cover.
