India curtailed 8,133 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar power during the April–June quarter of 2026 despite continued expansion in renewable energy capacity, according to government data. The unused electricity could have supplied power to around 1.4 million households for a year, highlighting persistent challenges in grid integration and transmission infrastructure. The development has renewed focus on strengthening grid flexibility, energy storage and transmission networks to accommodate India's rapidly growing renewable energy generation.
India curtailed 8,133 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar power during the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, highlighting the growing challenge of integrating renewable energy into the country's electricity network despite rapid additions in clean energy capacity. The curtailed electricity, which was available for generation but could not be absorbed by the grid, underscores the need for stronger transmission infrastructure, improved grid management and greater deployment of energy storage systems as India accelerates its renewable energy transition.
The figures, released by the government, show that solar power curtailment occurred during the April-June period even as renewable energy continues to account for an increasing share of India's electricity generation. Curtailment generally takes place when grid operators are unable to evacuate or distribute all the electricity generated because of transmission bottlenecks, local grid constraints or mismatches between electricity demand and renewable generation. As a result, solar plants are instructed to reduce or stop generation despite being capable of producing electricity.
The volume of curtailed energy during the quarter was substantial enough to meet the annual electricity requirements of nearly 1.4 million households, illustrating the economic and operational implications of underutilised renewable generation. Every unit of clean electricity that is curtailed represents lost generation potential and affects the financial returns of renewable energy developers, while also reducing the overall contribution of renewable energy to the national power mix.
Industry experts note that India's renewable energy capacity has expanded at a rapid pace in recent years, particularly in solar power, supported by large-scale government programmes and private sector investment. However, transmission infrastructure has not always expanded at the same pace, creating situations where generation capacity exceeds the ability of the grid to transport electricity from renewable-rich regions to major consumption centres. Seasonal demand fluctuations and varying weather conditions can further complicate grid balancing.
The government has acknowledged these challenges and continues to invest in strengthening the national transmission network through dedicated renewable energy corridors, interstate transmission projects and grid modernisation initiatives. Simultaneously, policymakers are encouraging greater deployment of battery energy storage systems and pumped hydro storage projects that can store excess renewable electricity generated during periods of high solar output and release it when demand rises.
Power sector specialists believe that improving forecasting systems and introducing more flexible grid operations will also be essential for reducing renewable energy curtailment. Better coordination between renewable energy generators, transmission utilities and grid operators can help optimise electricity dispatch while maintaining overall grid stability. Increased industrial electricity consumption during daytime hours and the expansion of green hydrogen production may also create additional demand for surplus renewable power in the future.
India has set ambitious renewable energy and clean energy targets as part of its broader climate and energy security strategy. Achieving these objectives will require not only continued investment in generation capacity but also parallel improvements in transmission infrastructure, storage technologies and electricity market reforms. Addressing renewable energy curtailment is therefore expected to become an increasingly important priority as larger volumes of solar and wind power are integrated into the national grid.
The latest curtailment figures highlight that the transition to clean energy involves not only expanding renewable generation but also building the infrastructure needed to efficiently deliver that electricity to consumers. Strengthening grid resilience and enhancing transmission capacity will be critical to ensuring that future renewable energy additions translate into reliable and productive power supply across the country.
