Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba has urged Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to expedite a permanent engineering solution for the landslide-prone stretch of National Highway 10 (NH-10), describing the route as the state's lifeline. During a meeting in New Delhi, the MP submitted a memorandum highlighting the recurring landslides that disrupt the movement of essential supplies, tourism and trade. He called for a comprehensive geotechnical investigation of the vulnerable corridor and proposed tunnel-based alternatives to improve all-weather connectivity and strengthen the highway's long-term resilience.
Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba has urged Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to fast-track a permanent solution for the landslide-prone stretches of National Highway 10 (NH-10), citing the recurring disruptions caused by slope failures along the state's primary road link with the rest of the country. The request was made during a meeting at Parliament House in New Delhi earlier this week.
During the meeting, Subba submitted a memorandum outlining the persistent landslide issues affecting NH-10, which he described as Sikkim's lifeline. According to the memorandum, repeated landslides have frequently interrupted traffic movement, affecting the supply of essential commodities, tourism activities, trade and the daily lives of residents dependent on the highway for connectivity.
The MP sought a comprehensive geotechnical investigation of the most vulnerable sections of the highway to identify a long-term engineering solution. He proposed the construction of tunnels as a permanent alternative, stating that repeated slope stabilisation measures implemented in the past have not been sufficient to prevent recurring landslides in the affected areas.
According to Subba, a tunnel-based solution would provide safer all-weather connectivity, minimise disruptions during the monsoon season and improve the long-term resilience of NH-10. He also requested that the Ministry engage technical experts to assess the corridor and recommend the most appropriate engineering intervention for the landslide-prone stretches before ensuring its timely execution.
NH-10 serves as the principal road corridor connecting Sikkim with West Bengal and the wider national highway network, making it critical for passenger movement, freight transport and the state's tourism sector. Repeated disruptions caused by landslides have raised concerns over supply chain reliability and regional connectivity, particularly during the monsoon months when slope failures become more frequent.
The proposal for a detailed geotechnical assessment and tunnel-based infrastructure reflects a broader emphasis on adopting long-term engineering solutions for vulnerable mountain highways rather than relying solely on periodic slope stabilisation works. If implemented, the measures are expected to improve the operational reliability of NH-10 and enhance connectivity to Sikkim throughout the year.
