Vasai-Virar civic body orders immediate evacuation of 74 highly dangerous buildings

Synopsis

The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has directed residents of 74 buildings classified as highly dangerous (C-1 category) to vacate their premises immediately due to the heightened risk of structural collapse during the ongoing monsoon. The civic body issued the evacuation order following a structural survey of buildings across the city and has warned that legal action may be taken against occupants who fail to comply. The move forms part of the corporation's annual monsoon preparedness exercise to minimise risks to life and property.

The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has ordered the immediate evacuation of 74 buildings identified as structurally unsafe under the C-1 category, citing the increased danger of collapse during the ongoing monsoon season. The directive was issued in the past week after civic authorities completed their annual structural assessment of ageing buildings across the city and found the identified structures to be unfit for habitation.
According to the civic body, residents occupying these buildings have been instructed to vacate their homes without delay to prevent any loss of life in the event of a structural failure. The C-1 classification is assigned to buildings considered highly dangerous and requiring immediate evacuation before demolition or redevelopment. The corporation stated that the order has been issued purely as a precautionary measure in view of the heavy rainfall and the elevated risks associated with weakened structures during the monsoon.
The evacuation notices follow a city-wide survey of 2,149 buildings undertaken by VVCMC to assess structural safety ahead of the monsoon. Besides the 74 buildings categorised as highly dangerous, the civic body has also identified several other buildings requiring repairs and maintenance to improve safety. Property owners and housing societies have been instructed to undertake the necessary remedial works in accordance with the structural audit findings.
Municipal officials have warned that occupants who continue to reside in buildings classified under the C-1 category despite repeated notices would be doing so at their own risk. The administration has indicated that legal action could be initiated against those failing to comply with the evacuation directives. The corporation has appealed to residents to cooperate with the authorities and prioritise public safety rather than remain in buildings that have been declared unsafe for occupation.
The latest action comes amid heightened vigilance over unsafe buildings in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region following recent structural incidents in Nalasopara and Virar, which prompted the civic body to intensify inspections of ageing and vulnerable structures. Authorities have stepped up monitoring of buildings showing signs of deterioration, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when the risk of collapse increases significantly.
VVCMC undertakes annual structural audits before every monsoon to identify buildings that pose a threat to public safety and to ensure preventive action is taken before severe weather conditions worsen structural vulnerabilities. The corporation has reiterated that residents should comply with evacuation notices and coordinate with the authorities to facilitate safe relocation while further action, including demolition or redevelopment of the identified buildings, is carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.
