The CATL-Stellantis battery gigafactory in Spain will employ an average of 1,000 Chinese workers during its construction phase, with the number expected to peak at 1,700 depending on visa and work permit approvals. The joint venture, Contemporary Star Energy (CSE), has also committed to training 4,000 workers from Spain's Aragon region to operate the facility once it reaches full capacity. Construction is progressing after receiving all required approvals, while commercial production is now expected to begin in the first few months of 2027, later than the earlier target of the end of 2026.
The battery gigafactory being jointly developed by China's CATL and Stellantis in Spain's Aragon region will employ an average of 1,000 workers from China during its construction phase, according to regional president Jorge Azcon. He shared the update during a press conference alongside Contemporary Star Energy (CSE) Chief Executive Andy Wu.
CSE, the 50:50 joint venture formed by CATL and Stellantis, also plans to train around 4,000 workers from the Aragon region who will operate the plant after it reaches full production capacity. The project is expected to strengthen the local workforce while bringing in Chinese technical expertise during the construction stage.
Construction of the battery facility began after the foundation stone was laid in late 2025. Azcon said the project has now secured all regulatory approvals required to complete construction. At present, around 500 people are working at the site, including 172 employees from China, most of whom are handling design, engineering and management responsibilities.
He further said Andy Wu will relocate to Zaragoza, the capital of Spain's Aragon region, in the coming period to oversee the project more closely.
The number of Chinese workers at the site is expected to gradually increase and could reach a peak of 1,700 during construction. Their arrival will depend on the pace at which visas and work permits are issued by the authorities.
The project timeline has also been revised. While battery production was initially expected to begin by the end of 2026, operations are now scheduled to start in the first few months of 2027.
The battery plant is part of a joint investment of up to EUR 4.1 billion by CATL and Stellantis to manufacture lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells in Zaragoza. The facility is planned to have a production capacity of up to 50 GWh in phases and will supply batteries for Stellantis' electric vehicles manufactured in Europe. The investment forms part of the automaker's strategy to expand affordable electric vehicle production while strengthening Europe's battery supply chain.
