SpiceJet has expanded its operational fleet by leasing three Airbus A320 aircraft on a damp lease basis, with the aircraft set to enter service over the past week. The move is part of the airline's ongoing fleet augmentation strategy aimed at improving operational flexibility while managing costs. The carrier has also indicated that discussions are underway with additional lessors to induct more aircraft in the coming months. The expansion comes as SpiceJet continues its efforts to restore capacity and strengthen its network after operating with a reduced fleet.
SpiceJet has leased three Airbus A320 aircraft under a damp lease arrangement, with the aircraft scheduled to begin operations over the past week. The move is part of the airline's ongoing efforts to expand its fleet and improve operational capacity.
The airline said the aircraft have been inducted on a damp lease basis, under which the lessor typically provides the aircraft along with certain operational services, while the airline manages the remaining operations. According to the company, this leasing model offers greater operational flexibility and also helps improve cost efficiency.
SpiceJet further said it is in advanced discussions with other aircraft lessors to induct additional aircraft in the coming months as part of its planned fleet augmentation programme. The proposed additions are expected to support the airline's efforts to increase capacity and strengthen its flight network.
The latest induction comes as SpiceJet continues to rebuild its fleet after facing operational and financial challenges over the past few years. The airline has been gradually bringing aircraft back into service while also exploring leasing opportunities to improve fleet availability and meet rising passenger demand.
According to data available on planespotters.com, SpiceJet currently has 11 aircraft in active service, while 38 aircraft remain parked. The addition of the three Airbus A320 aircraft is expected to provide a modest boost to the airline's operational fleet as it works towards expanding its services.
