Patel Engineering Ltd (PEL) has said it is working alongside disaster response agencies and local authorities to support rescue operations following the collapse of an under-construction tunnel at the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim's Namchi district. The incident, triggered by a landslide in the past week, claimed 10 lives and trapped 25 people, including project officials and workers, inside the ADIT-3 tunnel at Samardung in Jholungey. The company stated that it has deployed all necessary resources and engineering support to assist rescue teams in stabilising the tunnel and reaching those trapped. Authorities, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), remain engaged in the ongoing rescue operation.
Patel Engineering Ltd (PEL), which is executing the civil construction works for the tunnel at the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim, has said its project team is working with disaster response agencies and local authorities following the collapse of an under-construction tunnel in Namchi district. The incident occurred in the past week after a landslide caused the tunnel to collapse, leaving 10 people dead and 25 others trapped.
The collapse took place at the ADIT-3 tunnel located at Samardung in Jholungey, where project officials and workers were present at the time of the incident. According to available information, the trapped individuals included both construction workers and project personnel engaged at the hydropower project site.
In a statement issued following the incident, Patel Engineering expressed concern over the accident and said its project team was working in close coordination with the district administration, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local authorities and other emergency agencies to support the ongoing rescue operation.
The company stated that it had made all necessary resources, equipment and technical assistance available to facilitate rescue efforts. It added that its site engineering team was working round the clock alongside government agencies to help stabilise the affected tunnel section and enable rescue personnel to safely access the location where those trapped were believed to be.
Patel Engineering further said its immediate priority was to extend all possible support to the authorities conducting the rescue operation. The company indicated that engineering teams remained stationed at the site to provide technical assistance required during the operation, including measures to improve tunnel stability and ensure safe access for rescue workers.
Expressing condolences over the loss of lives, the company said its thoughts and prayers were with the families of those who died in the incident and that it stood with the bereaved families during the difficult period.
The tunnel forms part of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project, a major hydroelectric development in Sikkim. Rescue operations involving multiple agencies continued following the collapse, with authorities focusing on locating and safely evacuating those trapped inside the tunnel. The incident has once again highlighted the operational risks associated with infrastructure construction in geologically sensitive Himalayan regions, where landslides and unstable terrain can pose significant challenges to large-scale engineering projects.
