Synopsis

The Telangana government has launched the Indiramma Indlu-LIG Flats scheme to provide affordable housing support to eligible urban poor families across Hyderabad and surrounding urban areas. Announced in the past week, the initiative will facilitate the construction or purchase of Low-Income Group (LIG) flats with financial assistance of INR 6 lakh per beneficiary. The programme forms part of the state's broader Indiramma housing initiative aimed at expanding access to permanent housing for economically weaker sections in urban centres. The scheme is expected to cover beneficiaries residing in the Comprehensive Integrated Residential Urban Expansion (CURE) region while complementing the government's ongoing affordable housing efforts. It also seeks to address housing shortages in rapidly urbanising areas through a structured subsidy-based model backed by the state government.

The Telangana government has introduced the Indiramma Indlu-LIG Flats scheme for the urban poor in Hyderabad, extending financial support of INR 6 lakh to eligible beneficiaries for constructing or purchasing Low-Income Group (LIG) flats. The programme was launched in the past week as part of the state's wider affordable housing strategy under the Indiramma housing initiative and is intended to improve access to formal housing for economically weaker urban households.
The scheme is focused on residents within the Comprehensive Integrated Residential Urban Expansion (CURE) region and aims to support households that are unable to secure adequate housing through conventional market mechanisms. By providing direct financial assistance, the government intends to reduce the housing deficit among low-income families living in Hyderabad's expanding urban limits.
Under the initiative, each selected beneficiary will receive INR 6 lakh towards the construction or acquisition of an LIG flat. The programme complements the state's existing Indiramma housing policy, under which assistance has been extended to eligible families lacking permanent housing. The earlier Indiramma scheme provides financial assistance of INR 5 lakh to beneficiaries constructing houses on their own plots, while those without land are eligible for both a house site and financial support, subject to eligibility norms.
The latest urban housing programme is expected to operate alongside the state's broader residential development plans. The Telangana Cabinet had previously approved the construction of one lakh LIG houses and 30,000 Middle-Income Group (MIG) houses within the CURE region covering 24 Assembly constituencies, reflecting the government's emphasis on expanding affordable housing supply in and around Hyderabad.
The Indiramma housing programme forms part of the Telangana government's housing policy introduced after the launch of the scheme in 2024. It was designed to extend housing assistance to eligible economically weaker households through phased implementation. Government guidelines require beneficiaries to satisfy prescribed eligibility conditions, including not owning a registered permanent house and belonging to eligible income categories. Assistance is transferred directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism after selection.
With the introduction of the Indiramma Indlu-LIG Flats scheme, the state has expanded its affordable housing framework for urban areas by offering dedicated financial support for LIG housing. The initiative adds to Telangana's ongoing efforts to increase access to formal housing for low-income households while addressing residential demand arising from continued urban expansion in Hyderabad and its surrounding growth corridors.
