The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has deployed a special sanitation team to Pandharpur as part of the Maharashtra government's Safai Apnao, Bimari Bhagao campaign during the Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage. With lakhs of devotees expected to visit the temple town, the civic body will undertake a two-day cleanliness drive focused on maintaining hygiene across key public areas. The operation will be carried out under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and will include sanitation inspectors, sanitation workers and specialised suction and jetting units. The initiative aims to ensure a clean and hygienic environment around the temple precincts, public conveniences and sewerage infrastructure during one of Maharashtra's largest annual religious gatherings.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has dispatched a special sanitation team to Pandharpur to support cleanliness and public health measures during the Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage under the Maharashtra government's Safai Apnao, Bimari Bhagao campaign. The team will undertake sanitation operations across the pilgrimage town on July 21 and 22, when lakhs of devotees are expected to visit the Vitthal temple and surrounding areas.
The sanitation team was flagged off by Mayor Sujata Patil, who extended her best wishes to the personnel before their departure for Pandharpur. The initiative has been undertaken to help maintain cleanliness and hygiene during the annual pilgrimage, which witnesses a significant influx of devotees from across Maharashtra and neighbouring states.
The operation is being carried out under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Dr Ajay Gadde. On-site sanitation activities in Pandharpur will be led by sanitation inspectors Lavesh Patil and Navnath Thombre.
The special team comprises two sanitation inspectors and 30 sanitation workers. In addition, the civic body has deployed two fully equipped suction and jetting units from its sewerage department to support drainage maintenance and sanitation activities during the campaign.
According to the municipal corporation, the two-day drive will prioritise cleaning and disinfecting the temple precincts, major roads, public spaces, public toilets and sewerage infrastructure across Pandharpur. The deployment has been planned to strengthen sanitation arrangements during the peak pilgrimage period and to support local authorities in managing the increased public footfall.
NMMC stated that the sanitation personnel will work with a dedicated focus on maintaining a clean, safe and disease-free environment throughout the pilgrimage. The corporation added that the initiative forms part of the state's broader public health campaign to improve sanitation standards during large public gatherings and ensure that devotees are provided with hygienic surroundings while visiting the holy town.
The special deployment reflects the civic body's continued participation in inter-agency sanitation initiatives organised by the Maharashtra government for major religious events, where effective waste management, public hygiene and sewerage maintenance are critical to managing large congregations safely.
