Synopsis

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has granted in-principle approval to expand the capacity of its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh from 6.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 10.2 MTPA with an estimated investment of INR 31,000 crore. The project is expected to create direct and indirect employment during construction and operations. The expansion will be supported by raw materials sourced from SAIL's captive mines as well as domestic and imported supplies, with the project targeted for completion within 42 months.

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has granted in-principle approval for the expansion of its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh. The plant's production capacity will be increased from 6.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 10.2 MTPA at an estimated investment of INR 31,000 crore.
The development was shared in Parliament during the past week, where Minister of State for Steel Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, said the expansion project is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment during its construction and operational phases.
He further informed Parliament that the required raw materials for the project will be sourced from SAIL's captive mines along with domestic and imported supplies, ensuring the availability of key inputs for the proposed capacity addition.
According to the minister, the project is expected to be completed within a timeline of 42 months from the commencement of implementation.
Bhilai Steel Plant is SAIL's flagship integrated steel manufacturing facility and one of India's largest steel plants. Located in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, it has played a key role in supporting the country's infrastructure and industrial development for several decades.
The plant is the exclusive supplier of rails to Indian Railways and manufactures a wide range of rail products for different applications. It is also home to the Universal Rail Mill, which produces 130-metre-long single-piece rails, among the longest manufactured in the world.
Apart from railway products, Bhilai Steel Plant manufactures heavy structural steel products such as beams, along with plates and sheets that are widely used across infrastructure, construction, engineering and industrial projects.
The proposed expansion forms part of SAIL's broader strategy to increase its steel production capacity to meet the country's rising demand driven by infrastructure development, rail expansion, manufacturing growth and urbanisation. The public sector steelmaker has been pursuing phased capacity enhancement across its major integrated steel plants to strengthen domestic steel production and improve operational efficiency.
