Prayagraj Junction has commenced construction of two additional railway platforms as part of a long-pending capacity expansion aimed at easing congestion at one of North India's busiest stations. The project, which resumes after nearly six years, is expected to improve train handling, operational efficiency and passenger movement. The new infrastructure forms part of a broader station modernisation programme that includes upgrades to railway operations and passenger facilities, enabling the junction to accommodate rising traffic and future service requirements.
Work has started on constructing two new platforms at Prayagraj Junction, marking the revival of a long-awaited railway infrastructure project designed to increase the station's operational capacity. The expansion is expected to help the station manage higher train volumes while reducing congestion caused by increasing passenger and rail traffic over the years.
Prayagraj Junction is among the busiest railway stations in the North Central Railway zone, serving hundreds of passenger and freight train movements every day. Railway officials have identified the need for additional platforms to improve scheduling flexibility, minimise delays and strengthen the station's ability to handle growing demand.
The project had remained pending for several years due to operational and planning challenges. With preliminary work now underway, railway authorities have begun preparing the site for construction, paving the way for the addition of two platforms that will complement the station's existing infrastructure.
Once completed, the expanded platform capacity is expected to allow simultaneous handling of more trains, particularly during peak travel periods and festive seasons when passenger volumes rise significantly. The additional infrastructure is also expected to improve train turnaround times and reduce operational bottlenecks within the station yard.
The platform expansion is being undertaken alongside other infrastructure improvements planned for Prayagraj Junction. These include upgrades to railway operational facilities, track infrastructure and maintenance systems to support longer trains and improve overall efficiency. The integrated development is intended to enhance both passenger services and railway operations.
The station is also undergoing broader redevelopment to create a more modern transport hub with improved passenger amenities, better circulation spaces and upgraded access facilities. Railway authorities expect these improvements to strengthen the station's role as a major interchange connecting eastern, northern and central India.
The expansion reflects Indian Railways' continuing focus on increasing capacity at high-traffic stations through targeted infrastructure investments. By adding new platforms and upgrading supporting facilities, the project aims to accommodate future growth in rail services while improving reliability and passenger convenience.
After years of delay, the commencement of construction represents an important milestone for Prayagraj Junction. The additional platforms are expected to play a key role in supporting the station's long-term operational needs and ensuring it remains equipped to serve increasing passenger and train traffic in the coming years.
