The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a digital system that allows eligible residents living near select toll plazas to buy local toll passes through the Rajmargyatra Mobile App without visiting the toll plaza. The initiative has been launched at the Mundka–Bakkarwala Toll Plaza in Delhi and will be expanded across the country in the coming months. NHAI has also launched the MargMitra Help Centre within the app to provide multilingual assistance, grievance redressal, FASTag services and real-time complaint tracking, further strengthening digital services for highway users.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a digital facility that allows eligible residents living within a 20-kilometre radius of a toll plaza to purchase a local toll pass through the Rajmargyatra Mobile App. The authority said the pass offers unlimited travel through the respective toll plaza for a month, removing the need for commuters to visit the toll plaza to complete the application process.
Until now, residents seeking a local toll pass had to visit the toll plaza in person and submit supporting documents to establish their eligibility. Under the new system, the entire process can be completed digitally within a few minutes through the mobile application, making the process faster and reducing paperwork.
According to NHAI, the newly launched local pass feature has initially been introduced at the Mundka–Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Delhi's Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). The authority said the facility will be extended to other eligible toll plazas across the country in the coming months as part of its wider digital transformation programme.
The digital local pass system uses consent-based integration with government digital platforms, including DigiLocker and VAHAN, to automatically fetch verified details such as the commuter's address, vehicle registration details and the FASTag linked to the vehicle. NHAI said eligibility is further verified using a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based validation process, eliminating the need for manual document verification while improving transparency and accuracy.
Along with the digital toll pass, NHAI has also launched MargMitra, an intelligent digital assistance platform integrated into the Rajmargyatra Mobile App to provide support for National Highway users through a single interface.
The authority said users can type or speak their queries, feedback or grievances in any of the 22 officially supported Indian languages. The platform is designed to provide relevant information or guide users to the appropriate service without requiring multiple channels of communication.
MargMitra offers assistance on a range of highway-related services, including FASTag recharge, FASTag KYC requirements, refund status, annual pass services, local toll pass services and other commonly asked queries. For issues requiring intervention, commuters can register complaints directly through the platform, which automatically forwards them to the concerned department for resolution.
The help centre also allows users to track the status of their complaints in real time and provides an option to file an appeal if they are not satisfied with the action taken. In addition, commuters can check the blacklisting status of their FASTag, view pending electronic notices and report road safety concerns such as stranded vehicles, damaged road stretches or encroachments on National Highways.
The launch is part of NHAI's continued focus on expanding digital services for highway users. Over the past few years, the authority has introduced initiatives such as FASTag-based electronic toll collection, the Rajmargyatra Mobile App for travel-related services, and technology-driven highway monitoring systems aimed at reducing congestion, improving transparency and enhancing commuter convenience. The expansion of digital local toll passes and integrated assistance services aligns with the government's broader push towards paperless public services and improved digital governance across transport infrastructure.
