Gujarat has secured the top position in NITI Aayog’s Investment Friendliness Index for states and Union Territories, followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. The assessment highlights Gujarat’s strong performance in infrastructure, financial health and regulatory ease, making it the highest-ranked state for attracting investments. While releasing the report, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri said India needs to increase investments to support economic growth and strengthen demand. The index is aimed at helping states improve their investment ecosystem and competitiveness.
Gujarat has emerged as the highest-ranked state in NITI Aayog’s Investment Friendliness Index for states and Union Territories, while Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu secured the second and third positions, respectively.
The index report, released in the past week, ranked Gujarat at the top based on its strong performance across key parameters, including infrastructure, financial health and regulatory ease. These factors were identified as major contributors to the state's ability to attract investments and support business activity.
While releasing the report, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri said India’s investment rate currently stands at around 25 per cent. He noted that the country requires higher levels of investment, as increased investments not only support economic growth but also help strengthen overall demand in the economy.
The Investment Friendliness Index has been developed to assess how effectively states and Union Territories create an enabling environment for investment. It evaluates multiple aspects of governance, infrastructure and the regulatory framework that influence business decisions and private sector participation.
Gujarat has consistently remained among the country's leading investment destinations due to its industrial base, infrastructure network, policy support and ease of doing business initiatives. Maharashtra continues to be one of India's largest economic contributors with a diverse industrial and services sector, while Tamil Nadu has maintained its position as a major manufacturing and export hub, particularly in automobiles, electronics and renewable energy.
The latest rankings are expected to encourage states and Union Territories to further improve their investment ecosystem, strengthen governance standards and enhance infrastructure to attract greater domestic and global investments.
