The West Bengal government has ordered a temporary halt to under-construction commercial projects across the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area until July 31 following the collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Taratala that claimed multiple lives and left several workers injured. The suspension forms part of a wider safety review of projects approved under the previous administration, with authorities directing comprehensive audits of building plans, construction quality and regulatory compliance. The move comes amid concerns over structural safety standards in ongoing developments and is expected to impact commercial real estate activity across Kolkata in the near term. The government has indicated that projects will be allowed to resume only after undergoing scrutiny and meeting prescribed safety requirements.
The West Bengal government has suspended work on under-construction commercial projects within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area until July 31 following the collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Taratala that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the decision after visiting the accident site, where a three-storey warehouse under construction collapsed, trapping workers beneath concrete and steel debris. Rescue operations involving multiple agencies continued through the day as authorities worked to locate those still trapped under the rubble.
According to government officials, the suspension applies primarily to commercial developments and projects that received approvals under the previous state administration. Authorities have directed the KMC Commissioner and the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department to undertake a comprehensive review of ongoing projects, particularly those involving commercial construction and developments where permissions were granted on reclaimed or filled land parcels.
The state government has indicated that all affected projects will undergo technical scrutiny before construction activities are permitted to resume. The review process will include examinations of sanctioned building plans, structural designs and on-site construction practices. Work may recommence from August 1 subject to projects successfully clearing the audit process and meeting prescribed safety standards.
Preliminary assessments of the Taratala warehouse collapse have raised concerns regarding the structural design of the building. State officials stated that initial reports suggested potential deficiencies in the sanctioned plan, prompting a broader review of construction approvals and project execution standards across the city.
To oversee the exercise, the government plans to deploy a multi-agency team comprising officials from the Public Works Department, Fire Services, Civil Defence, Kolkata Police and the KMC. The committee will conduct site inspections, verify approved plans and evaluate compliance with applicable construction regulations before submitting its findings.
Separately, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has also announced a temporary suspension of construction activities across the city until July 31, citing monsoon-related safety concerns and the need to minimise risks associated with ongoing building works during the rainy season.
The suspension is expected to affect a range of commercial developments across Kolkata and may temporarily slow construction activity in one of eastern India's largest urban real estate markets. However, state authorities have maintained that ensuring construction safety and regulatory compliance remains the immediate priority following the fatal incident
