Synopsis

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has intensified efforts to remove encroachments and unauthorised parking along National Highways in a bid to improve road safety and traffic management. The authority has identified 595 critical locations across multiple states where unauthorised parking activities have been reported and is coordinating with state governments, district administrations and enforcement agencies to address the issue. Alongside enforcement measures, NHAI has ordered audits of Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) infrastructure to ensure key safety and monitoring equipment remains operational. The initiative also includes enhanced highway patrolling, deployment of ambulances and recovery vehicles, and integration of monitoring systems with enforcement agencies to strengthen incident response and improve safety standards across the national highway network.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has intensified enforcement measures against roadside encroachments and unauthorised parking on National Highways as part of a broader effort to improve road safety, traffic movement and incident management across the country.
In a statement issued on June 24, the authority said that unauthorised parking, roadside encroachments and unregulated activities along highway corridors continue to pose safety risks for motorists while also affecting traffic flow and operational efficiency on key transport routes.
To tackle the issue, NHAI has identified 595 critical locations across various states where unauthorised parking has been observed. The authority has mapped these sites and documented their latitude and longitude coordinates to facilitate targeted enforcement and monitoring activities.
According to NHAI, coordinated action is being undertaken in collaboration with state governments, district administrations and law enforcement agencies to remove unauthorised parking from National Highways and prevent the recurrence of such activities. The authority stated that the initiative is aimed at ensuring safer travel conditions for road users while improving traffic discipline along major highway stretches.
As part of the drive, NHAI has also directed its regional and field offices to conduct immediate audits of all Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) installations operating across the highway network. The review will focus on ensuring that traffic monitoring and safety equipment remains fully functional.
The authority said the audit will cover traffic surveillance cameras, video incident detection systems, variable speed detection systems, variable message signboards and emergency call boxes. These systems form an important component of highway monitoring infrastructure and are intended to support real-time traffic management and emergency response operations.
In addition to enforcement and technology audits, NHAI is prioritising the deployment of ambulances and vehicle recovery units across highway corridors to improve response times during emergencies and accidents. Enhanced highway patrolling is also being undertaken to strengthen monitoring and enforcement activities.
The authority further stated that ATMS-generated alerts are being integrated with enforcement agencies to enable quicker intervention in the event of traffic violations, incidents or operational disruptions. Proactive maintenance of highway safety infrastructure has also been identified as a key focus area under the initiative.
National Highways serve as critical transportation corridors for passenger and freight movement across India. NHAI noted that addressing encroachments, unauthorised parking and operational bottlenecks is essential for maintaining road safety standards and ensuring efficient traffic movement.
The latest measures form part of the authority’s ongoing efforts to strengthen highway management systems through a combination of enforcement, technology deployment and improved emergency response capabilities. By targeting identified hotspots and enhancing operational readiness, NHAI aims to create safer and more efficient travel conditions for users of the national highway network.
