Synopsis

The Maharashtra government has approved Navi Mumbai Metro Line 2, an 8.15-km corridor connecting Taloja and Khandeshwar, with a budget allocation of INR 5,575 crore. Proposed by CIDCO in 2011, the line will serve key nodes including Kamothe, Kalamboli and Taloja through eight stations. The corridor is expected to improve internal connectivity across Navi Mumbai and strengthen links with major transport infrastructure, including the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, as the city expands its metro network.

The Maharashtra government has approved Navi Mumbai Metro Line 2, an 8.15-km corridor connecting Taloja and Khandeshwar, nearly 15 years after the project was first proposed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The project received financial backing through a budgetary allocation of INR 5,575 crore announced in the state budget, enabling the long-pending metro corridor to move forward.
The proposed line is designed to improve connectivity across several rapidly growing residential and industrial areas of Navi Mumbai, including Kamothe, Kalamboli and Taloja. It is also expected to strengthen links with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is emerging as a major transport and economic node in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. According to government officials, the corridor will support intra-city mobility while complementing existing and planned transport infrastructure in the region.
Metro Line 2 will comprise eight stations located at Khandeshwar, Sector 10 Kamothe, Sector 2E Kalamboli, Sector 7E Kalamboli, Sector 13 Kalamboli, Kasadi, MIDC Station 1 and MIDC Station 2. The alignment is intended to serve both residential neighbourhoods and industrial zones, addressing growing travel demand generated by urban expansion in Navi Mumbai.
The corridor was originally proposed in 2011 as part of CIDCO’s broader metro network plan for Navi Mumbai. At that stage, the project was estimated to cost approximately INR 1,605 crore. Subsequent revisions to project scope, construction costs and associated infrastructure requirements resulted in the current estimated expenditure of INR 5,575 crore. The approval granted through the state budget provides the financial framework required for implementation of the project.
The line will connect with the operational Belapur–Pendhar metro corridor, although a gap of around 2.2 km between the two sections is yet to receive separate approval for integration. Plans have also been discussed for a future spur connection that would provide a direct link with the airport corridor, further strengthening the network’s connectivity.
The approval comes as Navi Mumbai continues to expand its metro network alongside major infrastructure projects, including the Navi Mumbai International Airport. State officials have indicated that the corridor will play an important role in improving public transport access within the city and supporting connectivity between emerging residential, industrial and transport hubs. With financial clearance now secured, Metro Line 2 becomes the second approved corridor in Navi Mumbai’s planned metro system and advances the city’s broader urban transport programme.
