Recognising the importance of better connectivity in mountainous terrain, the state government has approved a major investment to modernise the Chail Chowk–Janjehli route, a key road serving several settlements and emerging tourist destinations in Mandi district.
The Himachal Pradesh government has approved an infrastructure project worth INR 137.4 crore for the strengthening and upgradation of the Chail Chowk–Janjehli road. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during his visit to the Seraj region, underscoring the state's focus on improving transportation networks in interior areas.
The road corridor connects a number of villages in Mandi district and serves as an important route for residents engaged in agriculture, horticulture and small businesses. Over the years, challenging terrain and weather-related disruptions have affected smooth movement, making road improvement a long-standing demand of local communities.
Authorities expect the project to significantly improve accessibility to Janjehli, which has been attracting increasing attention from tourists because of its scenic landscapes and trekking opportunities. Better connectivity is likely to encourage visitor inflows and create opportunities for local businesses, including hotels, homestays and transport operators.
The upgraded road is also expected to facilitate faster movement of agricultural produce and improve access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities and emergency services. In a state where landslides and adverse weather frequently affect travel, stronger road infrastructure is seen as critical to ensuring year-round connectivity.
The investment forms part of Himachal Pradesh's broader efforts to modernise infrastructure in remote regions and promote balanced development. Apart from improving transportation, the project is expected to generate employment during the construction phase and provide a long-term boost to economic activity across the Seraj belt.
The road project is also expected to improve connectivity to a number of educational institutions and healthcare facilities that residents from remote villages depend upon. Faster and safer access could prove especially important during emergencies, when difficult terrain and damaged roads often delay medical assistance. Improved infrastructure may also help reduce travel costs and encourage greater movement of goods and services across the region.
Beyond its immediate economic impact, the investment reflects the state's larger strategy of strengthening infrastructure in lesser-developed hill areas. The government has been focusing on upgrading roads to support tourism, enhance rural connectivity and create more resilient transport networks capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions. Officials believe that better infrastructure in regions like Seraj can help stem migration from villages by creating new opportunities closer to home.
