IHG Targets 400-Hotel Milestone in India as Hospitality Expansion Accelerates

Synopsis

IHG Hotels & Resorts plans to more than triple its presence in India over the next five years, backed by a pipeline of 80 hotels and sustained signing momentum. The company views India as one of its most important growth markets, supported by rising travel demand, favourable demographics and increasing owner interest in branded hospitality assets. Alongside expanding established brands, IHG is introducing new offerings across luxury, premium and midscale segments. The strategy reflects growing confidence in India's hospitality sector and the country's emergence as a key destination for domestic and international travel.

IHG Hotels & Resorts is aiming to significantly expand its footprint in India, with plans to grow its portfolio to more than 400 open and pipeline hotels within the next five years. The company currently operates over 50 hotels in the country and has around 80 additional properties under development, reflecting strong momentum in one of its fastest-growing markets.
India has emerged as a strategic growth destination for the global hospitality group, driven by rising domestic travel, increasing business activity and growing demand for branded accommodation across multiple segments. The company reported a third consecutive year of record hotel signings in 2025, highlighting continued confidence among hotel owners and developers.
IHG's current India portfolio spans luxury, premium and midscale categories through brands such as Six Senses, InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, voco, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Garner and Staybridge Suites. The company is also preparing to introduce its luxury and lifestyle brand Vignette Collection in early 2026, further strengthening its presence in the high-end hospitality segment.
The group's expansion strategy is being supported by a balanced mix of new developments and conversion opportunities. Midscale and essentials brands continue to form the backbone of its Indian operations, with Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express accounting for the majority of operational hotels and properties in the pipeline. Demand from business travellers, leisure tourists and weekend vacationers has continued to support growth across these segments.
IHG has also witnessed increasing traction for its recently introduced Garner brand, which focuses on conversion-led growth in the midscale category. New signings in Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat and Rajasthan indicate growing interest from owners seeking internationally branded hospitality offerings.
In the premium segment, Crowne Plaza has expanded its development pipeline, while the company has begun introducing the voco brand across major urban centres and leisure destinations. Recent signings in cities such as Mumbai, Gurugram, Srinagar, Goa and Amritsar underline the brand's growing presence in the country.
Luxury and lifestyle properties are expected to contribute a larger share of future growth. InterContinental continues to expand across metropolitan markets and resort destinations, while Six Senses has strengthened IHG's presence in experiential luxury hospitality.
Industry observers note that India's branded hotel market remains relatively underpenetrated compared with other major global markets, creating significant opportunities for expansion. With a diversified brand portfolio and a substantial development pipeline, IHG is positioning itself to capture growing demand across multiple traveller segments while reinforcing its long-term commitment to the Indian hospitality sector.
The company currently operates 51 hotels across India and expects many of its pipeline projects to become operational over the next three to five years, supporting its next phase of growth in the country.
