Synopsis

The Himachal Pradesh government has signed implementation agreements for 19 hydropower projects with a combined generation capacity of 278 MW and an estimated investment of around INR 3,336 crore. The projects were formalised during the current year as part of the state’s efforts to expand renewable energy generation and utilise its hydropower resources. The government has also cancelled allocations for 15 projects due to a lack of progress by developers and plans to invite international bids for their implementation. The announcement comes as Himachal Pradesh continues to advance multiple hydroelectric developments, with several projects under construction and hundreds more at various stages of approval across the state.

The Himachal Pradesh government has signed implementation agreements for 19 hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 278 MW and a proposed investment of approximately INR 3,336 crore. The agreements were executed during the current year as part of the state’s ongoing programme to expand hydroelectric generation capacity and accelerate renewable energy development.
According to officials, the projects include the 9 MW Soyal Dashal, 6 MW Khauli-II, 9 MW Gramang, 10 MW Umli, 24 MW Bharmour Stage-I, 21 MW Bharmour Stage-II, 22.5 MW Harsar Stage-II, 19 MW Harsar Stage-III and 24 MW Tundah Stage-II hydroelectric projects.
The list also comprises the 18 MW Janglik, 15 MW Rupin Stage-II, 17 MW Dunali-I and II, 12 MW Jari, 18 MW Toral Kundli, 15 MW Tundan, 10 MW Kot Dogri, 8 MW Upper Kurmi, 11 MW Kalal Khol and 9.6 MW Melan projects.
The state government stated that the agreements form part of wider efforts to utilise Himachal Pradesh’s substantial hydropower resources and increase electricity generation capacity. Hydropower remains one of the state's most significant natural assets and a major contributor to its energy sector.
Alongside the new agreements, the government has cancelled the allotments of 15 hydropower projects after determining that the respective developers had shown limited interest in progressing implementation. Officials indicated that steps are now being taken to invite international bids for these projects in an effort to ensure their timely development and commissioning.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the state administration remains committed to harnessing Himachal Pradesh’s hydropower potential and expanding clean energy generation. He congratulated officials and employees of the energy department for their efforts in advancing the sector.
The Chief Minister also noted that construction of the 150 MW Tidong Stage-I Hydroelectric Project has been completed. In addition, the state government has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Geo Tropi India Pvt Ltd for the exploration and development of geothermal power projects, signalling an expansion of renewable energy initiatives beyond hydropower.
According to the government, Himachal Pradesh has an estimated hydropower potential of approximately 24,000 MW. Of this, 189 projects with a combined installed capacity of 12,588 MW have already been completed and are operational.
The state further reported that 54 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 1,528 MW are currently under construction. In addition, 526 projects with a combined capacity of 7,539 MW are at different stages of approval and regulatory processing.
The latest agreements are expected to add to the state’s renewable energy portfolio and contribute to ongoing efforts to expand electricity generation infrastructure while leveraging Himachal Pradesh’s river-based energy resources.
