The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has appointed G Ramesh Kumar as the Chief General Manager of its Assam regional office. Kumar has taken over the position from Loken Das and assumed charge with immediate effect, according to a statement issued by the institution on 22 June.
Kumar brings more than 30 years of experience in the banking and financial services sector, with expertise spanning rural and development banking, project financing and corporate debt funding. His appointment comes at a time when NABARD continues to focus on strengthening rural credit systems, agricultural financing and infrastructure development across states.
According to NABARD, Kumar has built extensive experience across various aspects of banking and finance during his career. His professional background includes work related to rural development initiatives, institutional financing and capacity-building programmes designed to support economic growth in rural areas.
Before assuming his new role in Assam, Kumar headed NABARD’s Business Operations vertical for more than four years. During this period, he was involved in efforts aimed at strengthening the functioning of banks and financial institutions while contributing to operational growth and institutional development initiatives within the sector.
NABARD stated that Kumar played an important role in supporting various banking and financial institutions through strategic business operations and development-oriented interventions. His experience is expected to support the organisation’s activities in Assam, where NABARD works closely with state agencies, financial institutions and rural stakeholders.
Prior to leading the Business Operations division, Kumar served as Chief Financial Officer of NABSAMRUDDHI Finance, a subsidiary of NABARD that focuses on financing development projects and infrastructure initiatives. In that capacity, he was associated with financial management and funding activities linked to development-oriented investments.
He also held the position of Vice President at NABCONS, NABARD’s consultancy arm. During his tenure there, Kumar managed and executed a range of consultancy assignments across India and overseas. These assignments covered various sectors related to rural development, agriculture, infrastructure and institutional strengthening.
NABARD is one of India's principal development financial institutions and plays a key role in rural credit planning, agricultural financing and infrastructure development. Through its state-level offices, the institution works with banks, cooperatives, government agencies and rural enterprises to support economic development and financial inclusion.
With Kumar assuming leadership of the Assam regional office, NABARD is expected to continue its focus on strengthening rural financial systems, supporting agricultural development and facilitating investments in rural infrastructure and livelihoods across the state. His experience across banking operations, project financing and consultancy is expected to contribute to the organisation’s ongoing initiatives in the region.
