Steel and mining major ArcelorMittal has entered into a strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate automation and digital transformation across its global manufacturing operations. Announced in the past week, the partnership will integrate AWS cloud, artificial intelligence and edge computing technologies into ArcelorMittal’s production processes to improve operational efficiency, asset reliability, workplace safety and energy performance. The company plans to deploy AI-enabled applications including predictive maintenance, computer-vision quality control and digital twins across its facilities worldwide. AWS will also develop a training programme for ArcelorMittal’s workforce to support digital adoption. Alongside the technology partnership, Amazon has signed a multi-year agreement to source lower-carbon structural steel from ArcelorMittal for its facilities and AWS data centres across Europe and the United Kingdom, supporting its decarbonisation objectives.
ArcelorMittal has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to automate and digitally transform its global operations through the deployment of cloud computing, artificial intelligence and edge technologies, the company announced in the past week. The collaboration is aimed at improving safety, operational reliability and energy efficiency across ArcelorMittal’s manufacturing network by integrating AWS technology directly into production environments.
Under the agreement, ArcelorMittal will converge parts of its operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) infrastructure onto AWS platforms designed for scalability and security. The move will extend cloud and AI capabilities to production facilities, enabling data-driven decision-making and automation at the point of manufacturing. The company said the partnership would help modernise industrial processes across its global footprint and support the wider adoption of digital technologies throughout its operations.
The collaboration will utilise AWS services across industrial Internet of Things (IoT) systems, real-time sensor networks and machine-learning applications. These technologies will be used to deploy AI-driven predictive maintenance tools, computer-vision-based quality inspection systems, process optimisation solutions and digital twins of production assets and manufacturing lines. According to the company, these applications are intended to improve equipment performance, reduce downtime and enhance operational efficiency across steelmaking facilities.
As part of the initiative, AWS will also design and deliver a comprehensive education programme for ArcelorMittal employees worldwide. The programme is expected to support the adoption of artificial intelligence and digital technologies at scale, equipping the workforce with the skills required to operate within increasingly automated manufacturing environments.
Nik Puri, Group Chief Information Officer and Chief Information Security Officer at ArcelorMittal, said the integration of operational and information technology on a single secure platform would help the company advance towards digitally enabled operations that are safer, more reliable and more sustainable. He noted that the initiative represented an effort to industrialise AI across the steelmaking value chain and embed advanced digital capabilities into everyday manufacturing processes.
In addition to the technology partnership, Amazon has entered into a multi-year Supply Framework Agreement with ArcelorMittal for structural steel across Europe and the United Kingdom. Under the arrangement, ArcelorMittal will supply lower-carbon XCarb steel for Amazon operational facilities and AWS data centres. The companies stated that the agreement supports Amazon’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 while encouraging the use of lower-carbon construction materials in large-scale infrastructure projects.
ArcelorMittal is among the world's largest integrated steel and mining companies, operating in 60 countries with primary steelmaking facilities across 14 countries. The company said the AWS partnership forms part of its broader strategy to leverage digital technologies to improve manufacturing performance and sustainability across its global operations.
