Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has initiated a series of special cleanliness drives and public awareness campaigns across the city as part of preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2025-26. Scheduled between June 15 and June 30, 2026, the initiative covers railway stations, the Sion-Panvel Highway, slum settlements, village areas, lakes, creek fronts, public and community toilets, back lanes and other neglected locations. Alongside intensive cleaning activities, the civic body is promoting compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, encouraging households to segregate waste into four categories and urging bulk waste generators, including housing societies and institutions, to process waste within their premises. The campaign is being implemented across all eight ward office jurisdictions through extensive public outreach and on-ground inspections.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has commenced a city-wide special cleanliness campaign and waste segregation awareness programme under the Swachh Survekshan 2025-26 initiative. The campaign, being conducted from June 15 to June 30, 2026, aims to improve sanitation standards across the municipal area while strengthening compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
Under the programme, the civic body has identified several locations that require focused attention, including railway stations, stretches along the Sion-Panvel Highway, slum settlements, village and gaothan areas, lakes, creek shorelines, public and community toilets, sanitation target units and narrow back lanes located behind residential buildings and housing clusters. Special cleanliness drives are being undertaken at these locations to improve overall environmental conditions and public hygiene.
Simultaneously, the corporation has intensified awareness efforts regarding waste management practices. Residents are being encouraged to segregate waste at source into four categories—wet waste, dry waste, domestic hazardous waste and sanitary waste. Citizens are also being advised to hand over segregated waste separately to municipal collection vehicles to facilitate scientific processing and disposal.
The civic body is further focusing on bulk waste generators, including large housing societies, commercial establishments and institutions. Such entities are being informed about their responsibility to establish and operate waste processing systems within their own premises to ensure decentralised and scientific disposal of the waste generated on a daily basis.
To support the outreach programme, NMMC has engaged AG Enviro and Parisar Sakhi to conduct awareness activities across all eight ward office jurisdictions. Teams from the organisations are visiting residential societies, institutions, commercial establishments and individual households to educate residents and stakeholders about segregation requirements and waste processing obligations.
As part of the special cleanliness initiative, the civic body undertook an intensive sanitation drive across several public and community toilet facilities within Zone 1. Cleaning activities were carried out at the Balaram Patil Public Toilet in Sector 5, Sanpada; the public toilet near Sunil Gavaskar Ground in Sector 2, CBD Belapur; the public toilet near the ITI at Agroli; as well as facilities near Nisarg Udyan in Koparkhairane and St Mary’s Garden. Internal areas and surrounding premises were cleaned thoroughly, while awareness activities were conducted among local residents.
In Zone 2, municipal officials carried out inspections and awareness visits at bulk waste generator facilities. Locations including Gavte Wadi, Mindspace and Chinchpada in Airoli, along with Green World Society in Digha, were inspected. Officials interacted with society representatives, company authorities and plant operators, providing guidance on maintaining and operating composting and waste processing facilities.
The special cleanliness drives are being implemented across all ward jurisdictions under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with oversight from Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar and coordination through Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Dr Ajay Gadde.
