Landslide cuts off Shillong-Dawki highway, disrupting traffic and connectivity in Meghalaya

Synopsis

• A major landslide along the Shillong-Dawki highway has disrupted vehicular movement on one of Meghalaya’s key road corridors connecting Shillong with Dawki near the India-Bangladesh border.
• The collapse occurred following heavy rainfall, leading to road damage and forcing authorities to restrict traffic movement through the affected stretch.
• Restoration work has been initiated by state agencies, with machinery deployed to clear debris and stabilise vulnerable sections of the hillside.
• The disruption has affected local commuters, commercial transport and tourist traffic, particularly during the ongoing monsoon season when the route witnesses significant movement.

The Shillong-Dawki highway, a crucial road link connecting Meghalaya’s capital with the border town of Dawki, was severely affected after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall damaged a section of the roadway, disrupting traffic movement and raising concerns over connectivity in the region.
According to information compiled from multiple reports, the landslide occurred along a vulnerable stretch of the highway following continuous rainfall over the past several days. Large quantities of earth, rocks and debris slid onto the road, damaging portions of the carriageway and rendering sections unsafe for vehicular movement.
Authorities moved swiftly to restrict traffic through the affected area as a precautionary measure. While emergency services and maintenance teams were deployed to the site, officials indicated that movement on the route would remain regulated until safety assessments and initial restoration work were completed.
The Shillong-Dawki highway serves as a critical transport corridor for passenger traffic, tourism and cross-border trade activities. The route connects Shillong with Dawki, a major tourist destination known for the Umngot River and an important gateway for trade between India and Bangladesh. The disruption has therefore impacted both local residents and businesses dependent on the corridor.
State government agencies and road maintenance authorities have deployed earthmovers and other equipment to remove debris and restore connectivity. Efforts are also underway to assess the extent of damage to the road structure and implement slope stabilisation measures to prevent further collapses.
Officials have noted that persistent rainfall continues to pose challenges to restoration activities, with several hillside sections remaining vulnerable to additional slips. Monitoring teams have been stationed at key locations to track ground conditions and ensure public safety.
The incident has once again highlighted the recurring challenges faced by road infrastructure in Meghalaya during the monsoon season. Mountainous terrain, steep slopes and intense rainfall frequently result in landslides that affect transport links across the state, particularly on highways connecting major urban centres and border regions.
Authorities have advised commuters to follow official traffic advisories and use alternative routes where available until normal movement is restored. Restoration work is expected to continue over the coming days as agencies work to reopen the highway and ensure the safe movement of vehicles along the corridor.
