The Delhi government has stepped up preparations for the upcoming monsoon by launching a large-scale pothole repair drive across the capital. The initiative, led by the Public Works Department (PWD), is focused on improving road conditions, enhancing commuter safety and ensuring that key transport corridors remain functional during the rainy season.
As part of the campaign, road inspection teams have been deployed across multiple zones to identify damaged stretches and undertake immediate repair work. Authorities have prioritised roads that experience high traffic volumes, with the objective of reducing disruptions caused by waterlogging, road deterioration and traffic congestion once monsoon showers intensify.
According to officials, thousands of potholes have already been repaired within a short period as the department works against time to complete critical maintenance before heavy rainfall arrives. The drive is part of a wider pre-monsoon preparedness programme that includes drain desilting, road maintenance and infrastructure inspections aimed at improving the city's resilience during adverse weather conditions.
Potholes remain one of the most common urban infrastructure challenges during the monsoon season. Water seepage, continuous vehicular movement and ageing road surfaces often contribute to road damage, increasing the risk of accidents and slowing traffic movement. By undertaking repairs before the onset of heavy rains, authorities hope to minimise the formation of larger road defects that can become difficult and expensive to address later.
