Synopsis

• Indore Municipal Corporation is set to begin the tendering process for 8,100 housing units under PMAY 2.0.
• The project aims to expand affordable housing availability and support families affected by urban infrastructure works.
• The initiative is expected to strengthen the city's housing stock amid rapid urban growth.
• Authorities view affordable housing as a key pillar of Indore's long-term development strategy.

Indore is gearing up for a major expansion of its affordable housing inventory, with the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) preparing to invite bids for the construction of 8,100 apartments under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) 2.0. The proposed development is expected to address the growing need for economically accessible housing while supporting the city's ongoing infrastructure and redevelopment efforts.
The housing initiative comes at a time when Indore continues to witness steady population growth and increasing pressure on urban resources. Officials see the new homes as an opportunity to provide dignified living spaces for economically weaker sections and lower-income groups while ensuring that urban expansion remains inclusive.
Apart from creating additional residential stock, the planned units are also expected to facilitate the rehabilitation of residents affected by civic projects such as road widening and other public infrastructure upgrades. By integrating housing with broader urban development, authorities aim to minimise displacement concerns and improve the quality of life for affected families.
The project forms part of the Centre's PMAY 2.0 framework, which seeks to accelerate the availability of affordable homes in urban areas through collaboration between local bodies and state governments. Indore's civic administration is expected to execute the construction in phases through a competitive tendering process, ensuring timely delivery and efficient implementation.
Over the past few years, Indore has emerged as one of Madhya Pradesh's fastest-growing cities, supported by investments in transport infrastructure, sanitation, public amenities and smart city initiatives. The demand for affordable housing has risen alongside this growth, making large-scale residential projects increasingly important for maintaining balanced urban development.
Real estate experts believe the addition of more than 8,000 homes could provide a significant boost to the affordable housing segment while helping contain the proliferation of informal settlements. They also point out that planned housing projects contribute to better infrastructure utilisation and more sustainable city growth.
As Indore continues to expand, the upcoming PMAY 2.0 project is expected to play an important role in shaping the city's residential landscape, reinforcing the objective of providing quality housing to a larger section of the urban population while supporting long-term development goals.
