The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to build a mini pumping station at the Maharashtra Nagar subway in Mankhurd to address recurring monsoon flooding that disrupts traffic and connectivity. The low-lying underpass frequently experiences waterlogging during heavy rainfall, prompting repeated closures and diversions. BMC has initiated the tendering process for the project, which is intended to improve stormwater drainage, reduce flood-related disruptions and strengthen monsoon resilience at one of the eastern suburb’s chronic flooding hotspots.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed the construction of a mini pumping station at the Maharashtra Nagar subway in Mankhurd as part of efforts to address recurring flooding at the location. The project comes after years of waterlogging during heavy rainfall, which has frequently disrupted traffic movement and affected connectivity in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai.
The Maharashtra Nagar subway is a critical transport link connecting local residential neighbourhoods with the Eastern Express Highway and adjoining parts of Mankhurd. Due to its low-lying topography, the underpass regularly accumulates rainwater during intense monsoon spells, often forcing authorities to temporarily close the route and divert traffic.
To mitigate the problem, BMC has initiated plans to install a dedicated pumping facility capable of rapidly draining accumulated water from the subway. Civic officials have reportedly commenced the tendering process for the project, which is expected to strengthen the area's stormwater management system and improve operational resilience during the monsoon season.
According to civic authorities, existing drainage arrangements have proved insufficient during periods of high-intensity rainfall, particularly when runoff from surrounding areas converges at the underpass. The proposed pumping station is intended to provide a mechanical solution that can continue removing water even when natural drainage systems are unable to cope with peak inflows.
The initiative forms part of a wider programme undertaken by BMC to address flood-prone locations across Mumbai. Over the years, the civic body has installed pumping stations at several vulnerable sites to reduce water accumulation and improve traffic continuity during extreme weather events. Similar infrastructure has become an important component of the city's monsoon preparedness strategy as rainfall patterns grow increasingly intense and unpredictable.
Officials believe that the proposed facility at Maharashtra Nagar could significantly reduce the duration and extent of waterlogging at the subway. By accelerating the removal of stormwater, the project aims to minimise traffic disruptions, improve commuter safety and maintain access for emergency services during periods of heavy rainfall.
The need for intervention at the location has been highlighted repeatedly following monsoon-related flooding incidents that left vehicles stranded and caused prolonged traffic congestion. Residents and commuters have long raised concerns about the frequency of flooding and its impact on daily travel.
Once completed, the pumping station is expected to become a permanent flood mitigation asset for the area, complementing existing drainage infrastructure and supporting BMC's efforts to improve climate resilience across Mumbai's transport network. The project underscores the growing focus on targeted infrastructure upgrades to address chronic urban flooding challenges in vulnerable parts of the city.
