Mumbai’s Tree Authority has approved the removal of 1,080 trees for three infrastructure and redevelopment projects, including MMRDA’s Chedda Nagar–Anand Nagar elevated corridor, MHADA’s Motilal Nagar redevelopment and a redevelopment scheme in Bandra. Of the affected trees, several will be transplanted while others will be felled based on project requirements. The approvals follow site inspections and technical reviews, allowing transport and urban renewal projects to move forward across key suburban locations.
Mumbai’s Tree Authority has approved proposals for the removal of 1,080 trees to enable the execution of key transport infrastructure and urban redevelopment projects across the city. The approvals, granted during a recent meeting of the authority, cover projects being undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and redevelopment agencies in Bandra.
The largest component of the approval relates to MMRDA’s proposed elevated corridor between Chedda Nagar in Ghatkopar and Anand Nagar in Thane. The project is intended to enhance connectivity along the Eastern Express Highway corridor and improve traffic movement between Mumbai and Thane. Surveys conducted along the alignment identified 1,331 trees, of which 621 were found to be affected by the project footprint. Under the approved proposal, 218 trees will be felled and 403 will be transplanted. Authorities had sought permission for the tree removal earlier this month following detailed site assessments.
A second approval pertains to MHADA’s redevelopment of Motilal Nagar in Goregaon, one of the city’s largest urban renewal initiatives. Inspections carried out by civic garden department officials between late 2025 and early 2026 identified 1,761 trees within the project area. Of these, 220 trees were found to be located within the redevelopment alignment. The approved plan allows for the felling of 89 trees and transplantation of 131 others to alternative locations.
The Tree Authority also cleared a proposal involving 239 trees affected by redevelopment works in Bandra. Together, the three projects account for the removal or relocation of 1,080 trees across Mumbai’s suburban areas. The proposals were reviewed following inspections by civic officials and presentations from the implementing agencies regarding project requirements and mitigation measures.
The approvals generated discussion among members of the authority, particularly regarding the elevated corridor project. Some members raised concerns over the extent of tree felling and sought clarification on the balance between felling and transplantation, as well as the handling of timber generated from affected trees. Project authorities subsequently presented details of the corridor design and the rationale for the proposed removals before the proposals were approved.
The Chedda Nagar–Anand Nagar elevated corridor and the Motilal Nagar redevelopment project are among several large-scale infrastructure and urban renewal schemes currently under implementation in Mumbai. Civic authorities stated that the approvals were necessary to facilitate project execution while incorporating transplantation measures wherever feasible. The decisions enable project proponents to proceed with subsequent stages of construction and redevelopment in accordance with statutory approvals and environmental conditions.
