Mira-Bhayander flyover opens after months of debate over lane design

Synopsis

The Mira-Bhayander flyover, which became the subject of public debate earlier this year over its four-lane-to-two-lane configuration, has now been opened to traffic after months of delay. The flyover, part of the Metro Line 9 double-decker corridor, was inaugurated by local political representatives and made operational for motorists. While concerns had earlier been raised about potential traffic bottlenecks and commuter safety, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has maintained that the design follows approved plans and is linked to existing land constraints, with provisions for future expansion once additional land becomes available.

The controversial Mira-Bhayander flyover, which had drawn widespread attention after its lane configuration triggered concerns among commuters and urban planners, has finally been opened to vehicular traffic. The structure was inaugurated by local BJP leaders and subsequently made operational, though officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the agency responsible for the project, were not part of the inauguration event.
The flyover had become a talking point across social media earlier this year after videos and photographs highlighted a section where a four-lane carriageway appeared to narrow into two lanes. The design prompted criticism from commuters and civic activists, who questioned whether the arrangement could create congestion and increase safety risks for motorists.
Responding to the criticism, MMRDA repeatedly stated that the lane transition was not a design flaw but a planned engineering feature. According to the authority, the flyover was designed within existing right-of-way limitations and available land. Officials explained that the current configuration accommodates traffic movement towards Bhayander East, while future expansion towards Bhayander West has already been incorporated into the project design.
The flyover forms an important part of the Dahisar East–Mira Bhayander Metro Line 9 double-decker corridor, a project intended to improve connectivity and reduce congestion in one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region's busiest suburban stretches. Up to the Golden Nest Circle junction, the structure operates with a full four-lane configuration. Beyond that point, space limitations, proximity to railway infrastructure, and pending land acquisition have resulted in a narrower section.
MMRDA had earlier announced that the project would undergo a third-party road safety audit before opening. The authority also said that several safety measures had been incorporated, including transition zones, lane delineators, crash barriers, reflective signage and rumble strips to guide motorists through the lane reduction section.
The delay in opening the flyover reportedly extended for several months as authorities reviewed the design and carried out required modifications and safety-related improvements. During this period, public discussion around the project continued, with many residents waiting for clarity on when the structure would become operational.
Officials have also indicated that the long-term plan includes an additional elevated arm crossing the Western Railway corridor towards Bhayander West. Once the required land becomes available and future phases are completed, the road network is expected to support a wider traffic configuration and further improve connectivity between Mira Road and Bhayander.
