Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu jointly inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth more than INR 47,600 crore in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district on 20 June 2026, an occasion that coincided with the President's birthday and marked the completion of two years of the BJP-led state government headed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
The event, held at Rairangpur, brought together 60 inaugurated projects and 12 foundation-stone-laying ceremonies spanning energy, industrial infrastructure, road connectivity, drinking water, healthcare, education, tourism, and irrigation sectors. The visit marked a rare occasion on which both the President and the Prime Minister appeared together at a public programme in the state, with Mayurbhanj being President Murmu's home district.
Among the most significant announcements, Modi laid the foundation stone for the Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) project at Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district, an investment of approximately INR 25,000 crore aimed at promoting cleaner utilisation of domestic coal resources, reducing import dependence, and generating new industrial and employment opportunities in the region.
On rail infrastructure, the Prime Minister dedicated two major projects the Hindol Road-Meramandali multi-tracking line and the Jakhapura-Jajpur Keonjhar Road-Baitarani Road multi-tracking project together valued at over INR 732 crore. The 27-km Hindol Road-Meramandali stretch, completed at a cost of INR 409 crore as part of the broader Budhapank-Salegaon multi-tracking initiative, is expected to enhance train handling capacity and facilitate smoother movement of coal, steel, and power-sector inputs along the corridor.
Other infrastructure announcements included INR 811 crore allocated for roads and bridges, INR 530 crore for transport and connectivity projects, and a further INR 3,218 crore for other infrastructure works. Additional projects inaugurated during the visit included a 300-bed district headquarters hospital building at Boudh, 24 Atal bus stands, nine automated vehicle testing stations across various districts, the Nayagarh town bypass on National Highway 57, the underground pipeline component of the Kusumi Smart Irrigation Project, and a sports complex along with a tribal research centre at Rairangpur.
Modi announced that Pahadpur, the native village of President Murmu's late husband, would be developed as a Solar Village under the Surya Gram initiative, and also announced a new Navodaya Vidyalaya for Mayurbhanj district. Earlier in her visit, President Murmu had inaugurated an AIIMS Bhubaneswar Satellite Centre at the Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital and a mega integrated rural piped water supply project covering mining-affected villages in the Kusumi block, along with a newly constructed Matrushakti Bhavan of the Brahma Kumaris, a Special Circuit House, and the office building of the Superintendent of Police for the newly created Rairangpur Police District.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said development becomes meaningful only when its benefits reach every village, family, and citizen, and described the launched projects as a reflection of social justice and inclusive growth. She also highlighted tribal welfare initiatives including the Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana, micro-credit support schemes for tribal women's self-help groups, and the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission.
The event was attended by Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Ministers K.V. Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, Union ministers, Members of Parliament, and senior state officials.
