• Five people lost their lives and 18 others were injured after a portion of an under-construction temple structure collapsed in Yashwadi village of Maharashtra’s Parbhani district.
• The incident occurred when the roof of the sabha mandap, or assembly hall, under construction at a Hanuman temple caved in during the afternoon.
• Rescue teams, local authorities and villagers launched immediate relief operations to evacuate those trapped beneath the debris.
• The state administration has initiated an investigation into the cause of the collapse, while treatment is being provided to the injured at nearby hospitals.
Five persons were killed and 18 others sustained injuries after the roof of an under-construction section of a Hanuman temple collapsed in Yashwadi village in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district on Saturday afternoon.
The incident took place at around 3.30 pm when a portion of the roof of the temple's under-construction sabha mandap, or assembly hall, suddenly gave way. Yashwadi village is located on the Parbhani-Manwat road, approximately 190 km from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
According to information gathered from multiple reports, several labourers and local residents were present at the site when the structure collapsed. The roof fell without warning, trapping a number of people beneath concrete slabs, steel reinforcement material and construction debris.
Following the incident, local residents rushed to the site and began rescue efforts before police, district administration officials and emergency response teams arrived. Earthmoving equipment and rescue personnel were deployed to clear the debris and search for those trapped underneath the collapsed structure.
Authorities confirmed that five people died in the accident, while 18 others suffered injuries of varying severity. The injured were shifted to nearby healthcare facilities for treatment, with some reported to be in serious condition.
Senior district officials and police personnel reached the site to oversee rescue operations and assess the extent of the damage. The administration continued search and clearance work for several hours to ensure that no one remained trapped under the rubble.
Preliminary reports indicate that the collapsed section was still under construction. Officials have initiated an inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the structural failure. The investigation is expected to examine construction practices, material quality and compliance with safety norms at the site.
The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns regarding safety measures at construction sites, particularly at projects where work continues in the presence of workers and visitors. Authorities are expected to submit a detailed report after completing the technical assessment of the collapsed structure.
Relief and rescue operations remained the immediate priority as officials coordinated medical assistance for the injured and support for the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
