Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil visited two recent building accident sites and several monsoon-affected locations across the city in the past week to review the civic response and direct officials to expedite safety and relief measures. The inspection covered the Avighna Society building in Shahbaz Belapur, where a balcony slab collapsed, and Geeta Apartment in Juhugaon, Vashi, where a falling external slab claimed one life. The mayor also assessed waterlogging near Mahape MIDC and drainage works along the Thane-Belapur Road. During the field visit, officials were instructed to accelerate structural assessments, remove hazardous portions of damaged buildings, improve drainage, clear fallen trees and strengthen emergency response efforts amid continuing heavy rainfall.
Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil conducted an extensive field inspection across the city in the past week to assess the impact of continuous monsoon rainfall, review recent building accidents and monitor civic preparedness. During the visit, she inspected the sites of two separate building-related incidents in Shahbaz Belapur and Juhugaon, Vashi, interacted with affected residents and instructed municipal officials to undertake immediate safety measures, structural assessments and relief-related actions.
The mayor first visited Avighna Society in Sector 19, Shahbaz village, Belapur, where the balcony slab of a first-floor flat collapsed on 4 July. The building housed 17 families, although no casualties were reported in the incident. Following the collapse, residents were evacuated as a precaution and shifted to a temporary shelter established at the municipal Warakari Bhavan in Belapur. While several families subsequently moved to stay with relatives, one family continues to reside at the shelter.
During her interaction with residents, the mayor was informed of their immediate concerns following the evacuation. She said occupants would be permitted to retrieve essential belongings from their homes only after the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation completed a structural assessment of the building. She urged residents to cooperate with the process to avoid any further accidents and directed officials to expedite the structural inspection. Deputy Commissioner Dr Amol Palve, Assistant Commissioner Prashant Nerkar and other civic officials were present during the inspection. The building has since been sealed, and security personnel have been deployed at the premises.
The mayor later inspected Geeta Apartment, a three-storey residential building in Sector 11, Juhugaon, Vashi, where an external second-floor slab along with its metal grill collapsed onto the road on 5 July. The incident resulted in the death of Rajesh Shetty. Following the inspection, she instructed municipal officials to remove all unstable portions of the structure, with particular emphasis on dismantling the remaining external grills immediately to eliminate further safety risks. Assistant Commissioner Sukhdev Yedve, Executive Engineer Pandharinath Chaude and other officials accompanied the inspection.
Beyond the building accident sites, Patil reviewed monsoon-related conditions at Mahape MIDC, where significant waterlogging had developed near the police outpost. She instructed Assistant Commissioner Bharat Dhande to accelerate the ongoing drain widening work being carried out using excavators to improve stormwater discharge. The inspection continued along the Thane-Belapur Road up to Dighe, where the mayor, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Dasharath Bhagat, also reviewed water flow through the Green World drainage channel.
During the inspection tour, the mayor noted that heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds over the past three days had led to numerous incidents of fallen trees across Navi Mumbai. She directed civic officials to speed up the removal of uprooted trees and restore normal movement at affected locations.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has also appealed to residents to avoid stepping outdoors unless absolutely necessary during periods of heavy rain and strong winds. Citizens have been advised not to stand beneath trees or park vehicles under them. In case of emergencies, residents have been asked to contact the municipal Disaster Management Control Room through the toll-free helpline numbers 1800222309 and 1800222310.
