A fire that originated in the electrical meter room of a residential building in Mumbai's Jogeshwari on Wednesday left 11 people injured, with dense smoke engulfing the structure and forcing emergency rescue operations. Although the blaze was confined to the ground-floor meter installation, the smoke quickly travelled through the building, trapping residents on the upper floors. Firefighters evacuated occupants and brought the situation under control before the flames could spread further.
The incident occurred at a six-storey residential chawl in Jogeshwari, where the fire reportedly started inside the meter room located on the ground floor. While the flames remained largely confined to the electrical installation, the resulting smoke spread rapidly through the stairwell and common passages, significantly reducing visibility and making evacuation difficult for residents.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade responded with multiple fire engines and rescue teams after receiving information about the incident. Firefighters carried out rescue operations using breathing apparatus and other emergency equipment to safely evacuate occupants who had been trapped by the smoke inside the building.
According to officials, 11 people sustained injuries, with the majority suffering from smoke inhalation rather than burn injuries. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, where most were reported to be in stable condition. The prompt evacuation by emergency responders is believed to have prevented a more serious tragedy.
Authorities stated that the fire was extinguished before it could spread to residential units, limiting structural damage primarily to the meter room and electrical infrastructure. However, the heavy smoke affected several floors, underscoring the danger posed by fires in enclosed residential buildings even when the flames themselves remain localised.
Officials have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire, with preliminary attention focused on the electrical meter installation. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of electrical systems, functional fire safety measures, and clear evacuation procedures in high-density residential buildings, particularly older housing complexes.
