Synopsis

Adani Enterprises has partnered with Abu Dhabi-based International Resources Holding (IRH), an IHC Group company, to establish a USD 11.5 billion (INR 1.08 lakh crore) integrated aluminium project in Odisha through a 50:50 joint venture. The project will comprise a 4 MMTPA alumina refinery, 2 MMTPA aluminium smelter, 4,000 MW captive power plant and a 1 MMTPA downstream manufacturing park, making it India's largest integrated aluminium investment. The venture marks Adani Group's entry into the aluminium sector, challenging the dominance of existing industry leaders while supporting Odisha's emergence as a global aluminium manufacturing hub and creating over 53,500 employment opportunities.

Adani Enterprises has announced its entry into India's aluminium manufacturing sector through a USD 11.5 billion (INR 1.08 lakh crore) joint venture with International Resources Holding (IRH), an Abu Dhabi-based natural resources company backed by the IHC Group. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Odisha government to establish one of the country's largest integrated aluminium manufacturing complexes, marking a significant diversification for the Adani Group into the non-ferrous metals industry.
The proposed venture will be structured as a 50:50 partnership between Adani Enterprises and IRH. The integrated project will comprise a 4 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) alumina refinery, a 2 MMTPA aluminium smelter, a 4,000 MW captive power plant and a 1 MMTPA downstream aluminium manufacturing park. The project will be developed in two phases and is expected to become India's largest integrated aluminium investment upon completion.
The investment is expected to be Odisha's largest foreign direct investment proposal and India's biggest foreign investment in the metallurgy sector. Odisha was selected because it possesses some of the country's richest bauxite reserves and already accounts for more than half of India's aluminium production. The state government expects the project to strengthen Odisha's position as a global hub for aluminium production and downstream manufacturing.
The venture also marks Adani Group's formal entry into aluminium manufacturing, expanding its presence in the metals sector after commissioning its large-scale copper smelter in Gujarat. Industry analysts believe the move will reshape India's aluminium market, which has long been dominated by Hindalco Industries, part of the Aditya Birla Group, and Vedanta Aluminium. The arrival of a third major producer is expected to increase competition, expand domestic production capacity and support downstream industries that rely on aluminium.
India's demand for aluminium has been rising steadily, driven by infrastructure development, renewable energy, electric mobility, power transmission, railways and construction. The central government has also outlined plans to increase domestic aluminium production to reduce dependence on imports of value-added products while meeting future industrial demand. The new integrated facility is expected to play a significant role in supporting these national objectives.
According to the companies, the project is expected to create approximately 53,500 employment opportunities, including around 35,000 jobs during construction and another 18,500 permanent positions once operations commence. Besides direct employment, the project is expected to stimulate ancillary industries, logistics services and regional infrastructure development across Odisha.
The partnership also reflects strengthening economic ties between India and the United Arab Emirates, with large-scale investments increasingly flowing into strategic sectors such as infrastructure, energy and manufacturing. Once operational, the integrated aluminium complex is expected to enhance India's self-reliance in aluminium production, strengthen the country's global competitiveness and create a new growth platform for Adani Enterprises in the metals business.
