CJ Darcl Logistics has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) to pilot heavy electric freight operations on India's upcoming e-highways. The partnership will begin with the Bengaluru–Chennai corridor, where the two organisations will jointly develop charging infrastructure and deploy heavy electric trucks. The initiative also includes battery-swapping facilities, solar-powered energy stations and logistics hubs to support zero-emission freight movement. The collaboration aims to evaluate the commercial viability of electric trucking while creating a scalable model for sustainable, low-carbon logistics across India's highway network.
CJ Darcl Logistics Ltd. has partnered with the National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) to pilot heavy electric freight operations on India's emerging e-highway network, marking a significant step towards decarbonising long-haul logistics. The collaboration seeks to evaluate the commercial viability of deploying heavy electric trucks while building the supporting infrastructure required for large-scale adoption of zero-emission freight transport across the country.
The two organisations have signed a memorandum of understanding under the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) programme to jointly develop charging infrastructure, establish operating models for heavy electric freight and create a fleet of heavy electric vehicles for commercial operations. The partnership combines CJ Darcl's expertise in multimodal logistics with NHEV's infrastructure development capabilities to accelerate the transition towards sustainable freight mobility.
The Bengaluru–Chennai corridor has been selected as the first pilot route because of its high freight volumes and strategic importance to industrial supply chains. The corridor will serve as a testing ground for heavy electric vehicle deployment before the model is expanded to other parts of the country. Officials believe the lessons from the pilot will help shape future electric freight operations on national highways.
As part of the project, NHEV will provide access to its integrated 3G Energy Stations, which combine high-capacity EV charging, battery-swapping facilities, solar power integration, warehousing and strategically located logistics hubs. The integrated infrastructure is intended to reduce vehicle downtime, improve fleet utilisation and make long-distance electric freight operations commercially viable.
The partnership also envisages an NCR trailer-exchange model, allowing diesel-powered trucks arriving at Delhi's borders to transfer trailers to electric trucks for onward movement within designated corridors. This pay-per-use interchange model is expected to lower the cost of electric freight adoption while ensuring uninterrupted cargo movement and improving operational efficiency.
Beyond infrastructure development, the two organisations will work together to identify truck manufacturers as technology partners, establish operational standards, train drivers and collaborate with logistics service providers to support efficient fleet management. They also plan to advocate policy and regulatory measures that can encourage wider adoption of heavy electric vehicles in India's logistics sector.
The collaboration builds on CJ Darcl's recent efforts to integrate heavy-duty battery electric vehicles into its logistics network and reflects the industry's growing focus on reducing carbon emissions from freight transportation. With road transport accounting for a significant share of logistics-related emissions, stakeholders view electric trucking as an important component of India's transition to cleaner mobility.
If the pilot proves successful, the Bengaluru–Chennai corridor could become a blueprint for a nationwide network of electric freight corridors. The partners believe the initiative will demonstrate that sustainable freight transport can be both environmentally responsible and commercially viable, encouraging wider industry participation in India's green logistics transformation.
