Synopsis

The Central government has revived eviction proceedings against the Delhi Gymkhana Club by issuing a fresh show-cause notice under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act. The club has been asked to explain why it should not be evicted from the prime government-owned property by July 7. The latest action follows earlier proceedings that were withdrawn on technical grounds, signalling the government's renewed effort to resolve the long-running dispute over the club's continued occupation of public land in the national capital.

One of Delhi's oldest and most exclusive institutions has once again come under the Centre's scrutiny. The Union government has reopened eviction proceedings against the Delhi Gymkhana Club, reviving a dispute that has remained unresolved for years. By issuing a fresh notice under the Public Premises Act, authorities have restarted the legal process after an earlier attempt was withdrawn, placing the future of the club's occupation of its prestigious Lutyens' Delhi premises back under examination.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has served a fresh show-cause notice to the Delhi Gymkhana Club, asking it to explain why eviction proceedings should not be initiated over its continued occupation of government-owned land. The club has been directed to submit its response by July 7, after which the Estate Officer will consider the matter before taking a decision.
The latest notice has been issued under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971, marking the Centre's renewed attempt to reclaim the property. The proceedings come after an earlier eviction process was withdrawn due to procedural and technical deficiencies, allowing the government to restart the exercise through a fresh legal route.
At the centre of the dispute is the government's contention that the club continues to occupy valuable public land without a valid long-term arrangement. Authorities are examining whether the premises should continue to remain with the club or be treated as unauthorised occupation under the provisions of the Act.
The Delhi Gymkhana Club, one of the country's oldest private social institutions, has historically occupied a prominent property in Lutyens' Delhi. Over the years, questions surrounding its lease, governance and continued use of government land have periodically surfaced, leading to multiple rounds of administrative and legal scrutiny.
The fresh proceedings do not amount to an eviction order but represent the first stage of a renewed legal process. The club has been given an opportunity to present its case, after which the Estate Officer will evaluate the submissions, applicable records and statutory provisions before deciding the next course of action.
The revival of the case underscores the Centre's broader efforts to review the occupation of high-value public properties in the national capital. The outcome of the proceedings could have implications not only for the future of the Delhi Gymkhana Club but also for the management and use of other government-owned institutional properties across Delhi.
