• The proposed Paliyam Thuruth-Kadamakkudy bridge in Kerala has received in-principle approval for its alignment, clearing a major hurdle for the long-pending connectivity project.
• Authorities have agreed on acquiring a small portion of land belonging to the Kochi Water Metro without affecting its future expansion plans.
• The bridge is expected to improve connectivity between Kadamakkudy and neighbouring areas, providing easier access to NH-66 and reducing dependence on ferry services.
• The proposal will now require Cabinet approval before land acquisition and construction activities can commence.
The long-pending Paliyam Thuruth-Kadamakkudy bridge project has moved a step closer to implementation after receiving in-principle approval for its alignment, resolving a key issue that had delayed the project for years. The decision marks a significant milestone for the proposed bridge, which is expected to improve connectivity for residents of the island region in Ernakulam district.
The alignment was approved during a meeting involving officials of the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB), the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) and local representatives. The project, which is being implemented by KRFB with funding support from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), had remained stalled after the proposed alignment overlapped with land earmarked for the Kochi Water Metro's future expansion.
As part of the agreement, a small portion of Water Metro land falling within the approved alignment will be acquired in a manner that does not affect the long-term expansion of the water transport network. The proposal will now be placed before the state Cabinet for final approval before land acquisition and execution of the project begin.
Once completed, the bridge will strengthen road connectivity between Kadamakkudy, Chathanad and surrounding island communities while providing improved access to NH-66. The project is also expected to reduce travel time, improve mobility for residents and support the socio-economic development of the region by offering a reliable alternative to existing ferry-dependent transport.
