Air China and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a commercial joint venture partnership, marking a significant step towards expanding cooperation between the two Star Alliance members. The proposed partnership is aimed at offering passengers greater travel flexibility, improved connectivity and enhanced customer benefits across their combined networks.
Under the agreement, the airlines will explore expanding their existing codeshare partnership to cover additional routes between Singapore and mainland China, domestic destinations within China and selected international markets beyond the two countries. They also plan to coordinate flight schedules, develop joint fare products and pursue joint marketing and revenue-sharing initiatives, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.
The collaboration will also extend to their loyalty programmes, with Air China's PhoenixMiles and Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer set to deepen cooperation. The move is expected to provide members of both programmes with expanded opportunities to earn and redeem miles while enjoying enhanced travel benefits across the two carriers.
In addition to commercial cooperation, both airlines will exchange operational best practices in areas such as ground handling, catering and in-flight services, with the objective of improving service quality and operational efficiency.
Air China and Singapore Airlines have maintained a longstanding relationship through the Star Alliance network and first introduced codeshare services in 2016. At present, the airlines codeshare on flights connecting Singapore with Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing and Shanghai. The proposed expansion is expected to further strengthen connectivity between the two countries and improve access to a wider range of destinations.
The airlines believe the enhanced partnership will not only provide customers with more seamless travel options but also contribute to the growth of tourism, trade and cultural exchanges between Singapore and China, reinforcing economic cooperation and strengthening regional air connectivity.
