Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited the remote Bara Bhangal region of Kangra district, marking the first visit by a Chief Minister to the area in nearly 15 years. The visit also created history as he became the first Chief Minister to spend the night in the remote Himalayan settlement, underscoring the state's focus on reaching geographically isolated communities.
The visit was carried out under the state government's 'Sarkar Gaon Ke Dwar' initiative, through which the Chief Minister has been touring remote villages across Himachal Pradesh to interact directly with residents and assess their development needs. Earlier, he had undertaken similar visits to remote areas in Shimla, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts.
During his stay in Bara Bhangal, the Chief Minister met local residents, farmers and sheep rearers to understand the challenges they face in agriculture, livestock rearing and connectivity. He visited agricultural fields, interacted with cultivators about the production and marketing of the region's renowned rajmah (kidney beans), and discussed issues affecting sheep farming.
Highlighting the government's efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, Sukhu encouraged farmers to adopt natural farming practices and informed them about enhanced Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for various agricultural commodities. He said the government has fixed an MSP of 100 per kg for wool to support sheep rearers, while MSPs have also been increased for naturally grown wheat, maize, barley, turmeric and ginger under the Rajiv Gandhi Prakritik Kheti Start-up Yojana.
The Chief Minister also took part in local cultural programmes, interacted with villagers to learn about their traditions and wore the traditional 'Chola-Dora' attire of the region. Residents welcomed the visit, expressing hope that the announcements and directions issued during the tour would accelerate development and improve access to essential services in one of Himachal Pradesh's most inaccessible regions.
The visit reflects the state government's continued emphasis on extending governance, welfare schemes and development initiatives to remote villages while addressing the concerns of communities living in difficult terrain.
