The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has approved an INR 1.04 crore project to develop the origin of the Gomti River at Kalinagar Tehsil in Pilibhit district into a tourism and spiritual destination. An initial allocation of INR 78 lakh has already been released, with the Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC) appointed as the implementing agency. The project will introduce visitor infrastructure, including a multipurpose hall, landscaped gardens, pathways and solar-powered amenities, while improving facilities for pilgrims and tourists. The initiative aims to preserve the site's cultural and religious significance and promote nature-based tourism around Gomat Tal, the river's source, which flows nearly 960 km across Uttar Pradesh before joining the Ganga in Ghazipur.
The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has approved an INR 1.04 crore project to develop the origin of the Gomti River at Kalinagar Tehsil in Pilibhit district into a tourism and spiritual destination. In the past week, the state government also released INR 78 lakh as the first instalment for the project and entrusted its execution to the Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC). The initiative is intended to improve visitor infrastructure while preserving the cultural, religious and environmental importance of the river's source.
According to an official statement, the project seeks to transform the Gomti's origin into a well-equipped destination for pilgrims, tourists and visitors interested in the region's cultural and natural heritage. The development is expected to strengthen facilities at the site while promoting religious, cultural and nature-based tourism.
Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said that human civilisation had historically flourished along riverbanks and noted that the Gomti River serves as both a lifeline for Uttar Pradesh and a symbol of the state's cultural and spiritual heritage. He stated that the river originates from Gomat Tal, formerly known as Phulhar Lake, near Madhotanda village in Pilibhit district.
The minister further said that the Gomti occupies a revered position in the Sanatan tradition, irrigating extensive parts of the state while supporting the livelihoods of millions of people. He added that the Tourism Department was developing the river's origin into a prominent destination for spiritual, cultural and tourism activities.
The approved project includes the construction of modern visitor infrastructure designed to improve the experience for pilgrims and tourists. Planned works comprise a multipurpose hall, a modern toilet block and a visitor shed. The development will also include interlocking pathways, landscaped gardens, site beautification works, solar-powered amenities and additional visitor facilities.
UPSTDC has been assigned responsibility for implementing the project and overseeing the execution of the approved works.
Originating from the ancient Phulhar Lake, also known as Gomat Tal, in the Madhotanda area of Pilibhit district, the Gomti River flows for nearly 960 km through several districts, including Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Hardoi, Sitapur, Lucknow, Barabanki, Sultanpur and Jaunpur, before joining the Ganga in Ghazipur district.
The official statement also highlighted the river's religious significance. It noted the belief that Lord Ram took a holy dip in the Gomti after his victory over Lanka and pointed out that Naimisharanya, regarded as the sacred penance site of 33 crore deities, is situated on the river's banks. Owing to these associations, the Gomti continues to hold an important place in Uttar Pradesh's religious faith and cultural heritage.
The minister further stated that the origin of Maa Gomti represents not merely a geographical location but an important centre of Sanatan faith and traditional cultural life. He added that its holistic development would provide improved facilities for pilgrims and tourists while supporting the state's efforts to give its sacred heritage sites greater recognition on the global tourism map.
