Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has reviewed the quality and maintenance of National Highways spanning 3,245 km in Jharkhand and 4,026 km in Uttarakhand, directing officials to strengthen execution, improve construction quality and enhance preparedness ahead of the monsoon season. The review meetings were held in the past week following feedback received through media reports and social media platforms.
According to an official statement, the review focused on assessing the condition of highway stretches in both states and identifying measures to improve maintenance standards and commuter experience across the national highway network.
During the meetings, Gadkari emphasised the importance of timely execution of maintenance works while maintaining the highest quality standards in highway construction and upkeep. He also called for greater adoption of modern construction technologies to develop more sustainable, durable and efficient road infrastructure.
The minister instructed officials and other stakeholders to accelerate on-ground maintenance activities, strengthen quality monitoring systems and improve the riding quality of National Highways to ensure seamless connectivity across key transport corridors.
Recognising the challenges posed by the approaching monsoon, Gadkari also directed officials to undertake comprehensive preparedness measures to minimise disruptions to traffic and infrastructure. These include effective drainage management, slope protection works, preventive maintenance programmes and the establishment of robust quick-response mechanisms to address weather-related incidents.
He stressed that timely intervention and coordinated action among all implementing agencies would be essential to maintain uninterrupted connectivity, safeguard commuters and improve the long-term durability of highway infrastructure.
The review was undertaken in response to concerns and feedback received from various sources, including media coverage and public inputs shared through social media platforms. Such reviews form part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to monitor highway conditions and ensure that maintenance standards are consistently implemented across the National Highway network.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been focusing on improving the operational efficiency and resilience of road infrastructure through regular inspections, technology adoption and preventive maintenance, particularly in states that are susceptible to heavy rainfall and difficult terrain during the monsoon season.
The latest review is expected to support quicker implementation of maintenance measures across National Highways in Jharkhand and Uttarakhand while reinforcing quality control and ensuring safer travel conditions for road users.
