The Andhra Pradesh government has approved the construction of a INR 98.68 crore rail over bridge (ROB) at the busy Gunadala railway crossing in Vijayawada to improve traffic flow and enhance commuter safety. The project, to be executed jointly by the state government and Indian Railways, is expected to eliminate long waits at the level crossing and provide seamless connectivity between key parts of the city. Once completed, the ROB is expected to strengthen urban mobility, reduce travel time and support the region's growing transportation needs.
The Andhra Pradesh government has approved the construction of a INR 98.68 crore rail over bridge (ROB) at the congested Gunadala railway crossing in Vijayawada, marking a significant step towards improving urban mobility and reducing traffic bottlenecks in one of the city's busiest transport corridors. The project is expected to enhance connectivity while improving road safety for thousands of commuters who pass through the crossing every day.
The proposed rail over bridge will replace the existing level crossing, where frequent closures due to passing trains often lead to long traffic queues and delays. Residents and commuters have long demanded a permanent solution, as the crossing serves as an important link connecting residential neighbourhoods, commercial areas and major arterial roads across Vijayawada.
The project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of INR 98.68 crore and will be implemented jointly by the Andhra Pradesh government and Indian Railways. The state government has committed to executing its share of the project in coordination with railway authorities to ensure timely completion and minimise disruption during construction.
According to officials, the bridge will significantly improve traffic movement by eliminating the need for vehicles to wait at the railway gate. The project is also expected to reduce fuel consumption caused by prolonged idling, lower traffic congestion and improve emergency response times by ensuring uninterrupted movement for ambulances, fire services and other essential vehicles.
The foundation stone for the project has already been laid, signalling the formal commencement of development works. Public representatives said the bridge forms part of broader efforts to upgrade urban transport infrastructure in Vijayawada and address long-standing traffic challenges arising from rapid population growth and increasing vehicle numbers.
The Gunadala ROB is expected to complement ongoing infrastructure improvements across the city, where authorities have been investing in road widening, flyovers and railway connectivity to improve overall transportation efficiency. Once operational, the bridge will provide smoother access between several key localities while supporting economic activity by facilitating faster movement of people and goods.
Urban planners have also noted that replacing busy railway level crossings with grade-separated structures improves both road and rail operations. While motorists benefit from uninterrupted travel, railway services can operate without concerns over road traffic interference, contributing to safer and more efficient transport networks.
Officials believe the project will deliver long-term benefits by reducing travel time, improving commuter convenience and supporting Vijayawada's expanding urban infrastructure. With traffic volumes expected to continue rising in the coming years, the new rail over bridge is seen as an important investment in strengthening the city's transport capacity and improving the quality of daily commuting.
