The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) is moving closer to implementing a citywide smart parking system, with a proposal covering 89 parking sites awaiting approval from the civic House. The initiative is aimed at modernising parking management through technology-driven solutions while improving traffic movement, commuter convenience and revenue collection across the city.
The proposal seeks approval for revised parking rates and operational guidelines before the Municipal Corporation floats fresh tenders for the management of all 89 parking locations. The project is expected to replace the existing system with an integrated smart parking framework that incorporates digital payment facilities, automated monitoring and improved management practices.
According to officials, the proposed smart parking model has been designed to improve the utilisation of available parking spaces while reducing congestion in high-footfall commercial and public areas. By introducing technology-based monitoring and cashless payment options, the civic body aims to make parking operations more transparent and efficient.
The revised framework includes updated parking charges that are intended to balance user convenience with the financial sustainability of parking operations. The proposal has undergone revisions following deliberations within the Municipal Corporation, with elected representatives seeking modifications to ensure that parking fees remain reasonable while supporting better service delivery.
The Municipal Corporation believes the project will address several long-standing challenges associated with parking management, including unauthorised parking, inefficient fee collection and limited monitoring of parking facilities.
