The Andhra Pradesh government has disbursed INR 300 crore in compensation to over 3,200 families displaced by the Veligonda irrigation project. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced the payment under the state's rehabilitation and resettlement programme, aimed at supporting project-affected households. The compensation will facilitate relocation while enabling progress on the Veligonda irrigation scheme, a major water infrastructure project designed to improve irrigation coverage and drinking water supply in drought-prone regions.
The Andhra Pradesh government has released INR 300 crore in compensation to families displaced by the Veligonda irrigation project, providing financial assistance to more than 3,200 project-affected beneficiaries under its rehabilitation and resettlement programme.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu disbursed the compensation during an event held in the past week, stating that the government remains committed to ensuring that families affected by major infrastructure projects receive timely rehabilitation support. The financial assistance is intended to facilitate the relocation of households whose land and properties have been acquired for the irrigation scheme.
According to the state government, the compensation has been distributed to over 3,200 evacuees associated with the Veligonda project. Officials said the payments form part of the rehabilitation package designed to support families during resettlement while enabling construction activities to progress without prolonged delays.
The Veligonda project is one of Andhra Pradesh's major irrigation schemes and has been developed to provide drinking water and irrigation facilities to drought-prone districts. The project includes tunnels, canals and associated water infrastructure intended to transfer water from the Krishna River basin to regions facing recurring water shortages.
Addressing beneficiaries, Naidu said infrastructure development should proceed alongside fair rehabilitation for affected communities. He stated that compensation and resettlement measures remain an integral component of project implementation and directed officials to ensure that eligible families receive assistance without administrative delays.
The Chief Minister also reviewed the project's implementation and emphasised the government's intention to expedite pending works. Officials noted that faster execution would help improve irrigation coverage, strengthen agricultural productivity and enhance drinking water availability in beneficiary regions.
The state government said it has prioritised the completion of major irrigation projects to improve water security and support rural development. Alongside construction activities, authorities are continuing land acquisition, rehabilitation and compensation processes in accordance with applicable policies.
Officials added that rehabilitation measures include financial compensation, relocation assistance and other benefits prescribed under the state's resettlement framework. They said the objective is to minimise the social impact of land acquisition while ensuring affected families are supported during the transition.
The Veligonda project remains one of the state's significant water infrastructure investments, with the government continuing construction alongside rehabilitation initiatives. Authorities said compensation disbursement would continue for eligible beneficiaries as project implementation progresses, ensuring that infrastructure development is accompanied by statutory rehabilitation obligations.
