The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has intensified its enforcement drive against commercial establishments allegedly operating in violation of sanctioned building plans following the Aliganj fire that claimed 15 lives earlier this week. During the past week, the authority issued show-cause notices to more than a dozen additional premises, including coaching centres, hotels, restaurants, nursing homes and gymnasiums, across several parts of the city. Property owners have been directed to submit approved building plans and explain the alleged deviations within the stipulated period, failing which legal action may follow. The latest action forms part of a wider citywide inspection campaign targeting unauthorised commercial use of buildings and non-compliance with development regulations in the wake of one of Lucknow's deadliest recent fire incidents.
The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has issued fresh show-cause notices to more than a dozen commercial establishments across the city during the past week as it continued a citywide enforcement drive launched after the fatal Aliganj fire that killed 15 people. The latest notices have been served on establishments allegedly operating in violation of sanctioned building plans, with owners directed to explain the deviations and produce approved maps within the prescribed timeframe or face legal action.
According to LDA officials, the latest round of action covered gymnasiums, coaching centres, restaurants, hotels and nursing homes. Nine establishments located in the old city areas of Chowk, Thakurganj, Balaganj and Hussainabad were served notices, while another five commercial properties in Zone 4, comprising Aliganj and adjoining localities, also came under scrutiny. Officials stated that the notices sought explanations from property owners regarding alleged departures from approved building plans and unauthorised construction. Establishments unable to produce sanctioned maps have been instructed to submit the documents before the authority at the earliest.
The authority said inspection activity during the day was comparatively limited because of Muharram-related security deployment and other administrative commitments, particularly in the old city. However, officials indicated that the inspection and enforcement campaign would gather pace again in the coming days as authorities continue to examine commercial properties for compliance with building regulations.
The latest notices follow a larger enforcement exercise undertaken a day earlier, when the LDA issued notices to 78 commercial establishments across Lucknow and initiated sealing proceedings against 55 buildings allegedly being used illegally for commercial purposes. Coaching institutes, eateries and other commercial establishments featured prominently among the properties identified during the inspections. The authority is examining whether buildings are being used in accordance with sanctioned development plans and whether unauthorised structural changes have been carried out.
The enforcement drive was initiated after a fire broke out in a three-storey commercial building with a basement on Usha Mehta Marg in Aliganj earlier this week. The incident, one of the deadliest fire accidents in Lucknow in recent years, claimed 15 lives and left nine others seriously injured. The tragedy prompted authorities to intensify scrutiny of commercial buildings, particularly those suspected of operating without adherence to approved plans or applicable safety norms.
Since the incident, the LDA has also initiated wider accountability measures, including action against officials over alleged lapses in enforcing building regulations and separate proceedings concerning the building where the fire occurred. The authority's ongoing inspections are intended to identify unauthorised commercial activity and ensure compliance with sanctioned building plans across the city.
