Uttar Pradesh aims to increase its renewable energy generation capacity from around 6,000 MW to 20,000 MW over the next two to three years, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced during the foundation stone laying ceremony of SAEL Industries' solar manufacturing facility in Jewar. The state government also highlighted the rapid adoption of rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, with more than six lakh households generating over 2,000 MW of electricity. The announcement coincided with SAEL's commitment to invest INR 8,200 crore in a solar manufacturing plant that will produce six GW of solar cells and five GW of solar modules annually. The government said the investment would strengthen domestic manufacturing, support employment generation and accelerate Uttar Pradesh's clean energy transition.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that the state plans to increase its renewable energy generation capacity to 20,000 MW within the next two to three years, up from the current level of around 6,000 MW. The announcement was made during the past week while laying the foundation stone for SAEL Industries' solar manufacturing facility in Jewar, where he outlined the state's strategy to expand renewable energy production and strengthen domestic clean energy manufacturing.
Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh was progressing rapidly towards its renewable energy target through a combination of utility-scale projects and decentralised generation. He noted that more than six lakh households across the state had become energy self-reliant by installing rooftop solar systems under the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Yojana. According to him, these installations have enabled households to meet most of their daytime electricity requirements while reducing overall power consumption and lowering electricity bills by approximately 50% to 60%.
The chief minister stated that rooftop solar systems installed under the scheme are collectively generating more than 2,000 MW of electricity in Uttar Pradesh. He said this capacity has reduced dependence on thermal power generation, allowing the state to meet part of its electricity demand through distributed renewable energy sources.
Referring to recent geopolitical developments in West Asia and disruptions affecting global energy markets, Adityanath said the energy crisis highlighted the importance of expanding renewable and green energy capacity. He observed that supply disruptions, including those linked to the Strait of Hormuz, had demonstrated how dependence on conventional fuels could affect economic growth and contribute to inflation. He said the Central Government had promoted renewable energy through an aggressive policy framework aimed at encouraging environmentally sustainable development.
The chief minister also highlighted the state's progress in biofuels, stating that Uttar Pradesh has emerged as India's largest ethanol-producing state following the implementation of the ethanol blending programme. He said the state's sugar industry now contributes nearly 55% of the country's ethanol production. In addition, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of compressed biogas (CBG) plants in the country, with plans to establish another 100 facilities over the next year. He added that agricultural residue supplied to these plants could be converted into compressed biogas, CNG and ethanol while providing farmers with an additional source of income and reducing crop residue burning.
Welcoming SAEL Industries' investment, Adityanath said the company would invest INR 8,200 crore to establish a manufacturing facility with an annual production capacity of six GW of solar cells and five GW of solar modules. He stated that the project would strengthen India's domestic solar manufacturing ecosystem, reduce dependence on imported equipment, particularly from China, generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities and create additional business for MSMEs, logistics providers, engineering firms and technical professionals. The chief minister added that the Uttar Pradesh government would continue to provide investors with the infrastructure, security and policy support required to facilitate industrial and renewable energy growth in the state.
